The afternoon sessions will start with a tour of the Scarlett Westbrook Garden, followed by a conversation on Student Net-gain back at Senate House: “how can students and other communities be empowered to take action?”

Lecture by Dr Shantella Sherman, full talk on our Youtube channel
Black women's bodies have been systematically examined, exploited, and hypersexualized throughout history, from plantations to urban homes. Their presence was seen as a problem, leading to trauma and separation from families. This continues as even their reproductive rights are targeted. #BlackHistory #SystemicRacism #WomensRights #SocialJustice

South London legend, the historian Carole Wright, a.k.a. Blak Outside, in front of the Ignatius Sancho mural on the Africa Centre, Southwark.

@blak_outside

Yesterday I was privileged to attend a dress rehearsal for Carole’s walk, ‘Life and Debt in Southwark’: a perambulation through the uniquely storied borough, weaving together many historical threads, from Dickens and Marshalsea Prison, to the Crossbones cemetery, social housing, Sokari Douglas Camp, the Spanish Civil War, Octavia Hill, and much more.

The walk will take place on September 19th 11am-1pm, as part of Open House, ‘exploring the working class, global majority and queer history of London’s Bankside and South Bank – recounting known and unknown histories next door to the City Wall.’

African Odysseys was set up in 2007 by Black community activists who were already showing films at various London venues. The idea was to give a singular home to those films, advise and help the BFI show African diaspora content and bring an underserved Black audience to the venue. The African Odysseys Steering Committee, a voluntary group, researches and suggests films/themes, advises on guests/scheduling, develops audiences and uses their community networks to advertise and promote Black films at the Southbank.

The programme was co-founded by Tony Warner from Black History Walks and David Somerset of the BFI. It has been a phenomenal success, bringing tens of thousands of new people to the BFI and greatly improved its reputation amongst the Black community. Before then brilliant directors like Menelik Shabbaz had problems getting his films shown there and many Black people did not know where the BFI Southbank was.

The programme runs at least once a month but often has multiple screenings/seasons like Ousmane Sembene, Horace Ove, Raoul Peck and Black and Banned. It also hosts talks and workshops on topics like Black Cowboys, the Harlem Renaissance, deaths in custody, African Spirituality, Aboriginal civil rights, Kenyan concentration camps and classical composers. In association with US film studio owner Tim Reid, the programme offered subsidised training for young filmmakers.

AO is a unique grassroots and institutional collaboration that screens educational and anti-racist films. There is nothing like it in Europe. It has a fantastic almost 20-year track record of great events, informative Q&A and packed houses of up to 450 people.

However, in June 2024 the Steering Committee learned that the Education/Film Programmer, Adult Community role held by Somerset, who has curated and championed the AO programme for 17 years, would be made redundant. The BFI’s sudden decision to delete the post would end the programme.

This was a surprise because on 29 August 2023 the Steering Committee had met with senior management who agreed, amongst other things, to start planning for the 20-year anniversary of African Odysseys in 2026

What a joy to celebrate International Women’s Day alongside such an inspiring group of practitioners, sharing and unravelling some of my recent public art commissions.

One piece that really resonated during the panel was my most recent commission ‘Mother Vérité’ in collaboration with @fridamom - a reflection of the idea we kept returning to - that ‘A Women are Artists’. We create, cultivate, and nurture, often all at once.

That conversation feels especially timely as I continue to work on my upcoming public artwork in Croydon, launching later this year. ‘Voices of Croydon: Echoes of Passage’ will explore the borough’s cultural and creative evolution, working closely with the community to celebrate the vibrant voices that make Croydon such a powerful cultural melting pot, offering local residents the opportunity to be included as part of the artwork.

Huge thanks to @idle_women and @culturecroydon for the invitation and the space to share 🙏🏾

This International Women’s Day, something rather special is happening in Croydon.

@idle_women – an arts and social justice collaboration – are bringing a weekend of creativity, conversation, and celebration to Braithwaite Hall.

From an informal panel exploring what an international gallery of women’s work could look like, to a day of collective making, food, music and connection, these are spaces created with and for women.

We spoke to Idle Women about Croydon, creativity, and why “all women are artists”… 🖼️

👉 Takes place on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 March.
