For day 8 of our look back on 2023, we’re excited to share our full production of Legaland, written by Jordan Zlotolow. This audiobook was recorded locally in Atlanta by Blake Long and narrated by Jacob York. The story is about Jeff Stymeweather’s journey into Legaland: an area devoid of any laws, but not, as Jeff discovers, without a code. This audiobook will be released in January 2024!

I’m so honored to say that I just won an AudioFile Earphones Award for narrating The Ingenue by @rachelkapelkedale for @macmillan.audio! Honestly I got a bit teary reading the review (swipe to read) because they truly understood the layers of emotion in the text that I brought my voice to, particularly the “righteous rage” that blooms over the course of the book. It’s wonderful to be recognized at all in an industry where all of your work is done absolutely alone—except for your engineer—in a room the size of a closet; but it’s even more meaningful when you are recognized for a book that truly resonated with you and let you express a bit of your own self along with the characters. Many thanks also to @blakelong, Zach, and Gordon for the amazing engineering, editing, and mastering: they made me sound my very best.

🎧It’s here! It’s here! Julia London’s sequel to You Lucky Dog! I was so excited when I heard she was writing it and then was over the moon when I was asked to narrate it! It’s such a great story with fantastically written characters plus dogs and coffee! What more could you want?! ____________________ About the book: All Harper Thompson wants for Christmas is the huge promotion she's worked so hard for - which she should get, as long as her launch of the hip new coffeehouse, Deja Brew, goes according to plan. Jonah Rogers is trying to save his family's coffee shop, Lucky Star, from going out of business, which will be tough with the brand-new Deja Brew opening across the street. When Jonah and Harper meet for the first time after accidentally swapping phones, their chemistry is as electric as a strand of Christmas lights. They love all the same things, like scary movies, greasy food-and most of all, dogs. It's a match made in heaven...until Jonah finds out that Harper's the one about to put him out of business. Only one coffee shop likely can survive, and a competition of one-upmanship ensues in a battle of the brews. The paws really come out when the local rescue shelter has a fundraiser where local businesses foster dogs, and patrons vote with their dollars for their favorite pup. Harper takes in an adorable old bulldog on behalf of Deja Brew, while Jonah fosters a perky three-legged dachshund for Lucky Star. As the excitement builds for who will be crowned King Mutt and king of the coffee hill, Harper and Jonah must decide if their connection was all steam or if they are the perfect blend. #audiobooks #audiobooknarrator #audiogram #romcombooks #listeningisreading @julia_f_london @berkleypub @prhaudio @recordedbooks Recorded by @blakelong @z_copeland

@howtodothework was at #6 last week on the NYT BSL so I thought it would be a great time to share this. If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, give it a listen or grab a hard copy. It’s a really special book. About How to Do the Work: As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical and spiritual health that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she’d learned with others—and soon “The Holistic Psychologist” was born. Dr. LePera offers both a manifesto for SelfHealing as well as an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic, and joyful life. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, she helps us recognize how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction—activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity, and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviors can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwell.

Happy Labor Day weekend! You got plans? Looking for something to listen to? I gotchu. The Baddest Girl in the World by Heather Frese is a fascinating story. Winner of the Lee Smith Novel Prize, the novel is is inventive, sharp, witty, and poignant. Give it a listen! #audiobooks #audiobooknarrator #weekendlistening ____________ Evie Austin, native of Hatteras Island, North Carolina and baddest girl on the planet, has not lived her life in a straight line. There have been several detours―career snafus, bad romantic choices, a loved but unplanned child―not to mention her ill-advised lifelong obsession with boxer Mike Tyson. Evie is not plucky, but when life’s changes smash over her like the rough surf of the local shoreline, she muddles through―until that moment of loss and longing when muddling will no longer suffice. This is the story of what the baddest girl on the planet must find in herself when a bag of pastries, a new lover, or quick trip to Vegas won’t fix anything, and when something more than casual haplessness is required.

Earlier this year Blake and I were lucky enough to record this gorgeous novel. Simon Van Booy gives us a beautiful Southern story about a young girl who suffers and struggles through life but keeps going. That decision to keep going has a ripple effect that travels through generations. __________________ In Kentucky, back in 1933, Carol's daddy lost his 13-year-old daughter in a game of cards. Award-winning author Simon Van Booy's spellbinding novel spans decades as he tells the story of Carol and the people in her life. Incidents intersect and lives unexpectedly change course in this masterfully interwoven story of chance and choice that leads home again to a night blessed with light. “What you give in this world," an old man tells his grandson, "will be given back to you." Those words illuminate the actions within this unforgettable novel and its connected characters. A young man survives two nearly fatal accidents. A Black family saves an orphaned White boy. A pregnant teenager is rescued by the side of the road. An autistic teenager is given his first job. Each incident grows in meaning and power over many decades as we see connections sometimes felt but not always apparent to the people themselves. "Everything was moving," observes Samuel (Carol's grandson) in the Kentucky woods. "An invisible force that was everywhere and made everything touch." Told by a master storyteller, Night Came with Many Stars is a rare novel that reveals how wondrous, mysterious, and magically connected life can be - the light Simon Van Booy creates in this novel illuminates our own lives. #audiobooks #audiobooknarrator #southernstories

Seems like a great time to check out the audiobook! Congratulations to @laurazigman !! “From best-selling author Laura Zigman, a hilarious novel about a wife and mother whose life is unraveling and the well-intentioned but increasingly disastrous steps she takes to course-correct her relationships, her career, and her belief in herself. Judy never intended to start wearing the dog. But when she stumbled across her son Teddy’s old baby sling during a halfhearted basement cleaning, something in her snapped. So: The dog went into the sling, Judy felt connected to another living being, and she’s repeated the process every day since. Life hasn’t gone according to Judy’s plan. Her career as a children’s book author offered a glimpse of success before taking an embarrassing nose dive. Teddy, now a teenager, treats her with some combination of mortification and indifference. Her best friend is dying. And her husband, Gary, has become a pot-addled professional "snackologist" who she can’t afford to divorce. On top of it all, she has a painfully ironic job writing articles for a self-help website - a poor fit for someone seemingly incapable of helping herself. Wickedly funny and surprisingly tender, Separation Anxiety offers a frank portrait of middle-aged limbo, examining the ebb and flow of life’s most important relationships. Tapping into the insecurities and anxieties that most of us keep under wraps, and with a voice that is at once gleefully irreverent and genuinely touching, Laura Zigman has crafted a new classic for anyone taking fumbling steps toward happiness.”

Happy Publishing Day! You Belong Here Now is a powerful debut novel from @dianna.rostad Montana 1925: An Irish boy orphaned by Spanish flu, a tiny girl who won’t speak, and a volatile young man who lies about his age to escape Hell’s Kitchen, are paraded on train platforms across the Midwest to work-worn folks. They journey countless miles, racing the sun westward.   Before they reach the last rejection and stop, the oldest, Charles, comes up with a daring plan, and alone, they set off toward the Yellowstone River and grassy mountains where the wild horses roam.   Fate guides them toward the ranch of a family stricken by loss. Nara, the daughter of a successful cattleman, has grown into a brusque spinster who refuses the kids on sight. She’s worked hard to gain her father’s respect and hopes to run their operation, but if the kids stay, she’ll be stuck in the kitchen.  Nara works them without mercy, hoping they’ll run off, but they buck up and show spirit, and though Nara will never be motherly, she begins to take to them. So, when Charles is jailed for freeing wild horses that were rounded up for slaughter, and an abusive mother from New York shows up to take the youngest, Nara does the unthinkable, risking everything she holds dear to change their lives forever. I’m a couple days late but no less excited. Happy Pub Day to @julia.r.fine for her beautiful book The Upstairs House! I was so honored to be the voice of this story. It’s such an honest look at a woman’s postpartum life. Check it out! #audiobooks #audiobooknarrator “There’s a madwoman upstairs, and only Megan Weiler can see her. Ravaged and sore from giving birth to her first child, Megan is mostly raising her newborn alone while her husband travels for work. Physically exhausted and mentally drained, she’s also wracked with guilt over her unfinished dissertation - a thesis on mid-century children’s literature. Enter a new upstairs neighbor: the ghost of quixotic children’s book writer Margaret Wise Brown - author of the beloved classic Goodnight Moon -whose existence no one else will acknowledge. It seems Margaret has unfinished business with her former lover, the once-famous socialite and actress Michael Strange, and is determined to draw Megan into the fray. As Michael joins the haunting, Megan finds herself caught in the wake of a supernatural power struggle - and until she can find a way to quiet these spirits, she and her newborn daughter are in terrible danger.”
