I have always tried to push myself to be capable.  Not always the best but always capable.  Capable of accepting the challenges and opportunies of life.  When football ended, my purpose became diversity.  I ran triathlons, marathons and 100-mile @leadvilleraceseries races. I climbed mountains and skied down them.  I learned to kayak and leaned that I hated it.  But I learned anyway.  I did not want to turn down any opportunity in life because I was not capable.

I pushed myself in other ways too.  I got my Master’s, and a @leedsustainability accreditation.  I became a swift water and high angle rescue instructor, joined the FEMA team and pursued high level professional firefighting assignments. All in the name of capability.  If you needed me, I would be ready. I was capable.

And now, here I sit, wondering if I’m still capable. I’m 52 years old. My body hurts. I’ve had a chronic disease and some mental health challenges. I have an office job.  I still work out, read books, do my best. But doubt settles in with age, comfort and conformity creep up and complacency follows.  Purpose is hard to find as I compromise what feels like my identity.

Excuses are easy to find.  I’m tired or sick or busy or behind at work. I don’t have time.  The weather’s not right, my family needs me. Pick one.  They’re all true.

Yesterday I got up at 3:45 and drove to a trailhead outside of Leadville, CO. Kota and I climbed 14,343 foot La Plata peak.  10 miles round trp.  4000 feet of vertical accent, most of that in a 3-mile stretch.  It was like climbing 300 flights of stairs continuously. The wind tried to blow us off the mountain.  It snowed and rained and was cold.  We finished in 5 and a half hours, stopped for coffee at @cohleadville and drove home.  I fed Kota, ate a @joybatchcookies took a shower and joined Trista for homecoming pictures with our daughter and a dinner date @hillstonedenver

Turns out I miss the mountains. Turns out I’m not too tired, or sick or busy or behind.  Turns out, the weather only enhanced the experience, and I could still be there for my family.  Turns out excuses are easy to lose. Turns out I’m still capable…

Today is the kind of day that makes me miss the mountains. It also makes me angry.
Not because I don’t live there anymore, but because a beautiful place full of special memories for our family is closing.
Piney River Ranch is one of those quintessential Colorado places that always shows off. 🌄We’d hike with our babies or fur babies, spend birthdays or family vacations in their adorable cabins, take friends and family who came to visit, or go up for the day to spot moose or paddleboard in its peaceful beauty.
Thankful that we are some of the lucky ones who got to experience its magic, but just wish it wasn’t goodbye. 🥺
