Last night during dinner I realized that I had never shared this project from last year. It’s one of the coolest commissions I’ve had, creating the cover art for artist Dustan’s album “Boy to the Man!” He and his production partner @blast.ketchup had such a clear idea when they came to me, and I was so happy to help them make it a reality, even though it was certainly an unusual concept. They wanted a version of Repin’s masterful, heartbreaking, and somewhat gruesome painting of Ivan the Terrible and his accidentally slain son ✨but✨ with Dustan as both of the figures, cradling a dying younger version of himself. It was a very interesting painting to make, despite the heavy subject (particularly for me since my little brother died from a head wound in 2019). Part mastercopy, part double portrait, and I especially appreciated the challenge of working from photo references (I sent references of the head studies Repin made for this painting to Dustan and Alex, and they admirably sent me wonderful reference photos in the same lighting/position). This painting is also a lot smaller than I would normally go for for a figurative work, 45x45cm, so I also had to get used to using lots of tiny little brushes 😅 Anyway, I’m happy to share this project with everyone now! Go give the album a listen on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, or YouTube- it’s amazing!!!! I was lucky enough to have it sent to me early so I could listen to it while painting🌸 . . . . #albumcover #albumart #paintingcomission #oilpainting #ilyarepin #ivantheterrible #painting #arte #oilpainter #boytotheman #mastercopy #mastercopy…ish #academicart #academicpainting
