5 years today.
Can’t seem to figure out if it feels like a short or long 5. Maybe with it opening during COVID era those days and weeks were drawn out ever so slightly? Or it feels short that we hit the ground running and haven’t stopped 🏃🏻‍♂️ that it’s a short 5. Either way here we are. The beauty I think of this restaurant is that while it has continued to grow and evolve it has always known what it is, a certain level of confidence in its hospitality, its space and of course its food. I want to thank @abutchersson who continues to be the driving force behind BLC in its cuisine and its continued pursuit of being a bit better everyday. Thank you to @ryanpelt for being Brad’s counterpart in the dining room, continually looking to teach the team and care for our guests. Thank you @__brandon_tyler__ and @world__champs for their support of the team in their transition to leaders of the staff. Thank you to those who were here before to get us here, @graciegates and @blauhaus_ @jaimegowans @luigi_805 who helped set a tone from jump that is still felt today. Thank you @helveydesignstudio to your amazing talent on creating a space that continues to wow and feel unique in a world that doesn’t take many chances. Thank you all our purveyors, farmers and our entire teams past and present that have continued to support this restaurant in @losolivosca. And to all the guests who continue to return to this space, this team, and this cuisine - we wouldn’t be here without you and all the oysters, crudo and chicken sandwiches yall have consumed in the last 5 years. Finally thank you @buddybrent @suzicf for seeing this vision what was more than 9 years ago and helped us take the risks that have led us here. Love you all.

3 Years.

@barlecote has been my second home for that long. I entered not knowing anything and immediately I was hooked. People I thought I wouldn’t get along with I consider practically family now. Words cannot explain how grateful I am for everyone who has taught me and made me feel like I belonged. Even though I struggle with anxiety, I was able to push through the busiest most stressful nights because I actually enjoyed what I was doing and I enjoyed the people who I did it alongside with. I was passionate. Although, all good things come to and end and it’s time for me to look forward and keep going. I wish I could fit every single picture in this post but it is way too many. I will always have this special home in my heart. May we meet again.

Steamed, served with melted butter (salted) a squeeze of lemon.

The light this time of year! A delight! Wedges of sun, lemon yellow, canary color, warming and warming and warming.

Inspired by vibrant hues, lately. Great greens, hot pinks, deep purples.

Smoothies and fresh juices. Raspberries, blackberries, pink pineapple from @bristolfarms. Radish sprout salads, spicy and peppery!

Things I’m loving: @olaplex conditioner, citrus scented candles, sugar snap peas, @cetaphil cleanser, bouquets of garden mint, @chobani coffee yogurt and novelty cups.

Busy planning a busy upcoming year! Where, in the USA, can I get the best

We are back at it today and I wanted to take just a second and bid farewell to Chef Jose Gomez.

Jose has been a fixture in this restaurant since the very beginning, he has helped us grow and become who we are today. He is the truest form of dedication.

Chef your hard work, commitment and your leadership will never be forgotten here.

Watching you grown and develop as a chef has been nothing short of a pleasure. Life around BLC won’t be the same without you but we PROMISE to do you proud.

If you insist, a brief note on the year.

In 2025 I tried to live slowly and yet, fully. (And I did, didn’t I?) and still, the year did go by so fast.

In 2025, I watched the full moon rise over the ocean. Spencer got a fuzzy, white bow tie. In October,I bought an ouija board at the Halloween store. I invested in Hermes soap for the bathroom. In the fall, a lightening storm that I watched from the window. Thunder followed.

There were a lot of trips! This year I went to Chicago. Indiana. Big Sur. New York. Laguna Beach. Eleuthera. Palm Springs three times.

In the in between, I loved Spencer! Sleeping in! Taking baths, arranging vases of flowers, watching vintage crime shows, self tanner, Odele shampoo, Whole Foods, butterflies, classic cars, clouds. (Pink clouds. White clouds. Orange clouds) Woodsy candles. Mochas with whipped cream clouds. A “New Yorker” subscription. A show of biology prints at the SB Natural History Museum in the summer was a particular favorite of the year.

I didn’t pay off my car, but I did pay off my credit card. I didn’t read 24 books but I did read 19 books and “Vanity Fair” was 800 pages and “Faust” was quite dense. I didn’t join a gym but I did get a library card. I didn’t drink alcohol. I drank sparkling water of every flavor, N/A Peroni’s, Martinelli’s sparkling apple cider. As of writing this, I am 902 days alcohol sober.

“Rise of Silas Lapham,” William Dean Howells
“Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” Arthur Conan Doyle
“Return of the Native,” Thomas Hardy

This year I learned/am learning about grace in pain. When I think about my mom, which is often, I think about her endurance toward the end of her life when she had two broken hips. I think about her softness in excruciatingly hard times. About her calm and tenderness despite disability. I really aim to be like her in that way. (My mother: complicated, wonderful, lonely, loving, kind, troubled, privileged, creative—so many stories for another time), it can be hard but I do try to remember that there is learning, beauty, care, kindness in hard things.
