This has always been a hyperfixation topic for me. As someone who studies the correlation between religion and violence, this historical moment comes up a lot in my research. We have to understand that this was not a fluke, or a rare event. This was a slow burn, gradual, all-encompassing mindset that everybody was susceptible to at the time. Nobody is above being manipulated into behaving in a way they otherwise would not. The best violence prevention is the antibiotic of self-awareness. When we become self-aware and understand that it could happen to us, we are less likely to be susceptible to group thinks and cult mindsets like this.

Reporting Bias Crimes in Challenging Times
Sunday, September 27 | 1-3pm

The Coalition Against Hate Crimes was founded in 1997 on the idea that improving the reporting of bias crimes will lead to more community-level healing around hate and violence issues. The current political climate, especially with regard to immigration issues, has called into question the wisdom of that approach. The CAHC is sponsoring a community conversation about how to best report bias crimes. Community advocates will address concerns from a panel representing the US Attorney’s Office, the Multnomah District Attorney’s Office, the Oregon Department of Justice, and Portland Police Bureau will offer their perspectives.

Narrow the aperture for truth and fact-checking so that all that remains for an undiscerning public is glossy praise void of the necessary discipline and journalistic standards that hold power in check.

CRITIC’S PICK: Sat., Sep. 5-Sun., Sep. 6. Railroad Earth—ATL, the venerable multi-disciplinary arts production and presentation organization, is hosting an art/music fandango called Revolution Ball. The two-day affair will feature artwork, films and musical performances by a slew of Atlanta artists. The Ball also serves as a birthday bash marking another trip around the sun for Andy Browne, singer-songwriter, YouTuber about town (‘Andy Browne’s Acoustic Underground’), founding member of The Nightporters and, more recently, Lynx Deluxe.
The music portion of the Revolution bill include Browne along with W8ING4UFOS, Five Eight, DQE à la carte, Deisha Oliver, Wes Ables, Art Linton, Travis Hill, Dave Ward and Adam Klein. Featured artists include Maurice Clifford, Lisa Shinault, Anna Trodglen and Railroad Earth co-founder Neil Friedied. Film screenings include ‘BenJenny,’ a 16mm film “starring” Benjamin Smoke and Jennifer DeNike with live soundtrack.

Based in the former Ar’lyn Worth private elementary schoolhouse in Emory Village, Railroad Earth is set up for inside and outside performances with plenty of room to install artwork of all shapes, sizes and materials. If the underground/experimental/alt-indie music and art scene is unfamiliar territory, the Revolution Ball presents an excellent opportunity to see and hear what it’s all about.
