We brought together 15 of our 20 inaugural Art + Water residents recently at The International Library of Young Authors in the Mission, another magical space founded by Dave Eggers.

It was our first real chance to all spend some time together, get to know each other a bit, hear about everyoneโ€™s practices, and ask questions. We talked, shared, toured the Library and McSweeneyโ€™s space and played an exquisite corpse, a collaborative art game where everyone contributes to the same work.

Head of Faculty Ana Teresa Fernaฬndez, Co-Directors Rebecca Teague and Nicole Avril, and Operations Coordinator Lulu Thrower were all there to answer questions and talk through the residency, how construction is going (excellent!), and what the first few weeks will look like when residents move into their studios.

It was such a good reminder of how much weโ€™re looking forward to this group coming together. 20 residents, 10 mentor artists, 30 different practices, and so much to learn from each other.

We canโ€™t wait for January and everything thatโ€™s ahead.
BIG THANK YOU to The International Library of Young Authors for having us, and to this incredible crew of artists for showing up and making the day so special.

Meet Lola Reed, one of the inaugural artists in Art + Waterโ€™s 2027 Cohort. An oil painter and recent California College of the Arts graduate, Lolaโ€™s work draws from image collection, collage, and the surreal intersections of memory, media, and the body. Rooted in the Bay Area, her practice transforms fragments of advertisements, print media, digital landscapes, and found ephemera into psychologically charged paintings that explore vulnerability, fragmentation, and the complexities of contemporary life.

โ€œI am excited about Art + Water as an extension of my arts education that fostered collaborative community space and a spirit of creating in unison. I rely on my community, for I do not want to create in an echo chamber. This give and take and exposure to new modes of creation always inevitably inform my practice.โ€

โ€œBeing born and raised in the Bay Area has undoubtedly influenced my process of creation which draws upon liminal subconscious landscapes. My practice, which is heavily based in image collection, then draws upon absurd fragments from print media, advertisements, digital landscapes, and other fleeting ephemera. This process of collage and dismemberment sanctifies and immortalizes the images with which I engage. I am interested in seeing how conditions of being and bodily fragmentation take root within these references. The simulacra of culture, consumption, and desire that exist in the Bay Area are translated through my surrealist collage.โ€

Weโ€™re honored to introduce the inaugural cohort of the Art + Water Residency.

20 residents. 10 mentor artists. One shared year of learning, making, and building something new together.

Beginning in January 2027, these artists will spend seven months at Pier 29, working alongside one another in free studios and learning directly from ten extraordinary mentor artists. Theyโ€™ll be the first to experience this program, and the first to help shape what Art + Water becomes.

To everyone who applied: thank you.

Reading more than 300 applications was one of the most inspiring parts of building Art + Water so far. The depth of talent, generosity, and ambition across the Bay Area reminded us exactly why this program matters.

Choosing just twenty artists was incredibly difficult. We know there are many more artists who deserve this opportunity, and weโ€™re committed to growing Art + Water so that this is only the beginning.

Thank you for believing in what weโ€™re building.

Hereโ€™s to the first cohort
