My column in today’s Colchester Gazette - Who says a family day out has to cost a 💣

Read the full column and add your recommendations below 🫶🏼

Who says a great family day out has to cost £100?

Feeling the pinch recently? Me too. I regularly chat to my parent pals about the cost of living, and people often ask how I manage to do so much with the children. The secret? I’m basically a professional freebie hunter.

A family day out involving an activity, travel, lunch and snacks can easily swallow £100 before you’ve even located the car keys. But here’s my public service announcement: you can have fun for free.

We’re lucky to live in an incredible part of Essex, surrounded by countryside, coastline and countless opportunities for adventure.

Take West Mersea, where you can spend a happy afternoon beachcombing for sea glass. Walton-on-the-Naze is another treasure trove for budding fossil and shark’s teeth hunters. Bar the petrol and parking, neither costs a penny.

Closer to home, Colchester Sports Park has a free public cycling area for children finding their feet on two wheels. Castle Park is perfect for picnics, playground adventures and treasure hunts, while Colchester Natural History Museum is completely free to enter.

Fancy a Blue Peter badge? Children aged 5-15 can earn one, and it gets them free entry to participating attractions with a paying adult, as long as they bring the badge and their Blue Peter badge card. Check each attraction’s terms before you go.

Never underestimate a good walk, either. Dedham Vale and Manningtree are both crying out to be explored. Pack a picnic, invent a treasure hunt and, if necessary, bribe the children with Haribo every ten minutes.

Now that’s money well spent. Or not spent at all!

I’m so proud of you both. 🥹
Que siempre sean niñas fuertes, seguras de sí mismas y, sobre todo, llenas del amor de Dios. 🤍✨

I was actually talking about the Blue Peter badge with some friends recently, and they had NO idea about this… and I felt like I’d been keeping such a good secret from them 😂😂

So I said I’d make it into a reel because then I thought… hang on, maybe loads of other people don’t know about this either?!

If your child is aged 5–13, they can get a Blue Peter badge and it can get them free entry to loads of participating attractions across the UK, including zoos, aquariums, museums, castles, historic places, galleries and gardens. 🎟️💙

It’s honestly so handy to have and can save families a fair bit of money on days out, especially when you’re paying for a whole family!

We’re just patiently waiting for K to turn 5 so we can apply for his 😂

And the best bit is that this isn’t even the only badge you can apply for! Y has a couple of the different badges now and her aim is to collect them all 🥹💙

Anyway, I thought I’d share because if my friends didn’t know about it, maybe you didn’t either 😂

Did you know about the Blue Peter badge? 👀💙

Filming for Blue Peter & BBC for something that will eventually go out on Children In Need, it’s great to give something back to the sport and to those less fortunate than us lucky enough to race each week 🙏🏼

Throwback Thursday - BBC Superstars Winner

Back in the 80’s was a fine time for me in television. I was a regular on a children’s programme: Blue Peter (never got the badge though. Maybe one day still!) All the game shows who put sports stars through their paces but none more so than Superstars. Of course I used it as a training platform for my Judo calendar and it was a great showcase for the sport! It demonstrated how Judo was great for all round fitness and agility, complimenting an active lifestyle. It made me a household name, and along with it, Judo.

For more top training tips, I have a 14 day newsletter you can all sign up for with more of these little quests. Find the sign up on neiladamsjudo.con

💙 Did you know a Blue Peter badge can help families save money on days out? 🎟️✨

Both of my girls have applied for their Blue Peter badges — and I love that they got to choose something they were passionate about.

🐝 Grace chose Bumblebees, learning about why they’re important and how we can help protect them.
🌊 Evelyn chose Protecting the Ocean, sharing what we can all do to look after our oceans and marine life.

The best part is that it’s not just about getting a badge. It encourages children to learn about something they care about, get creative and feel proud of their achievement. 💙

And there’s a brilliant bonus for families…

🎟️ Blue Peter badge holders can get free entry to participating attractions across the UK, including places such as museums, zoos, castles and other family attractions. That can make a BIG difference when you’re trying to keep the cost of family days out down!

👧 Children need to be at least 5 years old to apply.

So if you’ve got a Blue Peter fan at home, this could be a really lovely project to do together — and it could lead to lots of family adventures afterwards! 🏰🦁🌳

💡 Always check the current Blue Peter website and individual attraction before visiting, as the participating venues and entry conditions can change.

Would your child choose 🐝 Bumblebees, 🌊 the Ocean, or something completely different?
