While Storm Harry raged for the likes of Sicily, Italy and Malta, western regions of the Mediterranean saw a few days of fun, clean swell, including Spain here.

A subtle shift to strong westerly winds begins to take shape across much of the Mediterranean through the remainder of this week and into the weekend, so expect more W swell for many zones. Check your local forecast via the app or site.

Waves in the Mediterranean are nothing new. But an XL east swell? Surfers like @franciscoporcella haven’t seen anything like it in over 20 years.

UK based forecaster @jbatemansurfline explains:

“A southerly-displaced jet stream pushed a broad but relatively weak low-pressure system across Spain and into the western Mediterranean over the weekend of January 17–18. As the low slowly migrated east earlier this week, it squeezed against a strong, stable high-pressure block over eastern Russia.

This pressure gradient generated gale-force easterly winds (30–40+ knots) on the northern flank of the low, with the wind field stretching from Crete all the way west to the eastern coast of Spain.

Satellite data confirmed a significant easterly swell, peaking around 25–30 ft on Tuesday, January 20, particularly to the southeast of Sicily. The result was widespread storm damage and coastal flooding across multiple regions.

As is often the case, there was a silver lining: east-facing coastlines across the central and western Med have been lighting up with quality surf as the system weakens and drifts farther east.

And we’re not done yet. A subtle shift to strong westerly winds begin to take shape across much of the Mediterranean through the remainder of this week and into next weekend - setting up W swell for many zones.”
