This Friday I’ll be joining several fantastic writers (@zobecquer @sunspilledink & @_ambalievable_ ) for a night of literary experimentation. I’ll be reading from a collection of short stories and poems called Instructions on Remembering. And I’ll be performing original live music (the song you’re hearing now). Explore the depths with us October 2nd at 6pm at King’s Books in Tacoma.

Here’s one of the poems I’ll be reading this Friday:

Rearrange time, question your entire life, keep an eye on the unending mystery she said. I will cross Death with you, a trip to an emerald garden, to life continued. Let me go home my longtime friend.

This poem is sourced from Murder, She Wrote; Death on the Emerald Isle, by Jessica Fletcher & Terrie Farley Moran, and it was purchased at King’s Books, where you can join us this Friday! I’ll have prints available for purchase of this poem as well as a few others I’ll be reading.

Thanks for listening, and I look forward to seeing you all on Friday. Love ya, Sasha.

“My Name Means Free” is our forthcoming children’s picture book! Join author Tala Khanmalek and illustrator Saiyare Refaei this November 21st, from 2–4pm at @toolboxlabs (309 Puyallup Ave, Tacoma).

We’ll do a little cover reveal and share a reading from this forthcoming children’s book about Azad—a non-binary child of Iranian descent whose name means “free”—and talk about the process of bringing their story to life, making art amid war, and resisting cultural and identity erasure through art.

Just as Azad reimagines Norooz and the haftseen in the book, we’ll invite our community to do some reimagining of our own by building a community altar together during the event. We’ll also have coloring and crafting.

Participants will also have the opportunity to preorder “My Name Means Free” with @bluecactuspress and help us bring this book into the world.

Children, families, artists, and community members of all ages are warmly welcome. This is a free event, no registration required.

This event is supported by the City of Tacoma and Tacoma Art Commission’s TAIP Grant while all views are our own.

Meet Lorenzo Bécquer and celebrate Runtimes with a special book signing at Page Turner Books on August 15 from 11 AM–2 PM.

Get your copy of Runtimes signed and spend some time with the author while you're there. Published by Vega Books, an imprint of Blue Cactus Press, Runtimes invites readers into Lorenzo's distinctive work and perspective. Come say hello, browse the shelves, and add a signed copy to your collection.
This event will take place at Page Turner Books, located at 215 1st Ave. S., Kent, WA.

About the book:
In Runtimes, Colombian American author Lorenzo Bécquer guides readers through interconnected realities–from lunar outposts to mythic dimensions–while grappling with themes of ancestral memory, surveillance, and spiritual transformation. Told in a series of interstellar flight logs and transcripts called runtimes, this visionary, bilingual English-Spanish text blends speculative fiction and philosophical inquiry to examine our rapidly unraveling world.

Last month, in celebration of Pride Month in Tacoma, and in honor of our 2SLGBTQIA+ community, Tahoma Indian Center and @thegrandcinema rolled out the 3rd film in the Sovereign Cinema Series - Being Thunder

On Friday, July 10th, attendees gathered in the theater ahead of the film start and were treated to a powerhouse performance by local Indigenous drag performer, @cherribepsi, who moved throughout the theater space, bringing smiles, laughter and cheers.

This good and welcoming medicine primed the space for the film to come, which moved hearts, and inspired others to lean into the authenticity of their own unique medicine as Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+ peoples. For those with limited exposure to Two Spirit experiences, it was eye-opening.

“Being Thunder transcends just a story about a person who is Two-Spirited. It encapsulates the human experience of love, belonging, family, culture, and the resiliency of overcoming adversities. The film is the expression of being a person,” shared attendee, Olivia G.

As the film ended, guests were welcomed into the lounge to visit with vendor relatives @bluecactuspress , @themezzymermaid and the @puyalluptribeofindians Pride Committee, enjoying a light refreshment of tea provided by @roseislandfarm , and fresh baked cookies at the Tahoma Indian Center table. Photo ops with Cherri Bepsi was also a treat!

The evening successfully wove together media, art and community in celebration of our Indigiqueer relatives, imparting a lasting impact on all who attended.

“The Being Thunder event was a great experience. I enjoyed the drag performance, and I learned about Two-Spirit identities and the challenges they face in their communities. Overall, it was a fun and educational event,” shared attendee, Jazz R.

We’re so thankful to all of you beautiful community members who made it out to this powerful event. Let’s continue to uplift our 2SLGBTQIA+ relatives year-round!

Did you attend? We’d love to hear your reflections in the comments!

We hold out hands up to @tacomacreates for funding this amazing collaboration.

Our next Sovereign Cinema film will be announced soon. Stay tuned!

Coming off of summer solstice, I wanted to offer some opportunities to build creative community, and not have to leave the house lol. So I’m hosting three workshops this summer that focus on how we can keep writing through rupture. The first, Writing the Body, is less than a week away! In workshop two we’ll study and practice writing grief, and in workshop three we will explore writing rage. All genres and levels welcome. Suggested donation is $10 but I’m using a pay what you can model. Special thanks to @bluecactuspress her partnering with me on this, and to @jaedachanel for this amazing flyer. You can register for one or all three workshops. Space will be limited just to ensure we have a nice cozy vibe, register using the link in my bio.

‘Practice and Politics’ does not offer simplistic “right answers” for politically engaged practice. Instead, it asks therapists to become more reflective about their own positioning, countertransference, institutional participation, and assumptions about care. For therapists working with marginalized identities, reproductive trauma, religious trauma, or intergenerational oppression, many sections will likely feel particularly resonant.

The author writes, “People want to talk about political events in therapy because they are directly affected by them in their daily lives. Climate crises, the cost of living, bodily autonomy, police brutality, and fears of being stripped of constitutional rights are but a few of many politicized issues that may arise. My social work training lends itself to an entry point that utilizes anti-oppression as a framework for interpreting these large-scale topics.
Anti-oppressive perspectives dominate the political left so clients who are culturally saturated in these narratives will need their therapists to help them separate a structural analysis from interpersonal dynamics, microaggressions from narcissistic injury, and historical marginalization from residual anger.“

And the case studies included are helpful for teaching/supervision! Thanks for sending me an e-copy @bluecactuspress @the.politicized.practitioner
