POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The last time I spoke to @ChrisBrownOfficial was 18 years ago when I was a fresh-faced journalist who had only been writing professionally for a year. Starting our careers around the same time, he’d just come on the scene and was being hailed as the second coming of @MichaelJackson. I interviewed him for @BluesAndSoul for one of his very first - if not the first - UK cover stories. It was a big moment for us both. However, the evening was full of twists and turns that made for one of my most memorable interviews.

It took place on a weekday in London around 10pm. But before heading over to Chris’ hotel, I went to a listening party for @TroubleMan31’s ‘King’ album. I had a few drinks, listened to the album and spoke with T.I. for a little bit. The interview with Chris went really well. He really loved music, which always gets me nerding out in interviews. After I left to get my train home, I realised I was a little tipsy. I fell asleep on the train and woke up at my stop with a sore head, which I thought was from drinking. When I woke up the next morning I couldn’t find my phone, my wallet or my dictaphone with the interview on it. Turns out I’d been mugged and the sore head was from the guy punching me in the head. How do I know this? I called my phone and he answered! 😂 I asked for my dictaphone back. He agreed to meet me but didn’t show. I ended up writing the interview from memory with the label’s sign off.

Fast forward to last night and Chris’ first UK tour show in 14 years. Having a full circle moment, we got to chop it up briefly backstage at @TheO2London, thanks to one of my closest friends. Chris was blown away seeing the magazine after all this time and said he “had to sign it”, which he did, writing: “Real to the core.” He also said we should do another interview (Chris, I’m gonna take you up on that offer. Believe that! 🤝🏻).
