For me, BDKL has always been a place where magic hides. Last year at BDKL10, I rediscovered a feeling akin to reuniting with my mother after a decade apart. It filled me with immense pride for our Southeast Asia Blues community, proving what a warm, harmonious, and unified space we can build together.
Returning this year for #bdkl11, that magic hasn't faded in the slightest; if anything, it has grown deeper and richer. Thanks to a series of unexpected opportunities, I found myself stepping into several new roles this year—and I truly cherished every single moment.

1. Stepping onto the Stage
As someone who never particularly enjoyed performing, I was encouraged and persuaded by @pacharaphorn_zil to take the plunge - which led to my very first formal Blues performance. This experience brought me so much: new friendships, dance skills, and the ability to think on my feet and solve problems in the moment. The time we spent rehearsing together was incredibly fun, and I feel that I’ve grown in terms of my confidence and willingness to express myself. I am so enjoy working with my team. @yuqivicky

2. Bringing "The Boys" to Life
It all started with a random thought: I texted Raj a wild idea—what if we put together a "Blues Boys" performance at BDKL this year? When I didn't hear back initially, I assumed the idea had been dropped. But the moment I arrived in KL for our dry-run rehearsals, I discovered the plan was not only alive, but had grown into a team of even more incredible, fascinating people. I was so moved I was left practically speechless.

Seeing all the "Boys" from different countries unite and collaborate was the most beautiful picture I could have asked for. Thank you, @raj_thekish , for keeping my idea alive. And thank you to all the BOYS for making my dream complete.

I often get very intimidated when dancing with instructors and I don't feel particularly confident leading - but I am grateful that @raj_thekish happen to record this dance conversation I had with Lucas during the @bluesdancingkl 11th Anniversary pre-party at @yapahshakhouse Kapitan. Thanks to @pennyandlucas teachings last year and @laureenquah 's heels warmups, body awareness and conditioning - I feel I have grown a little bit more in my blues dancing journey- while my connection and movement is still hit or miss.... but I feel confident in saying there is a bit more growth this year...

Soul Last Minute at BDKL11 ✨

It all started when Sarah asked Raj & Johnny to put together a boys’ performance. Raj told Johnny he’d be happy to join if Johnny could organise it.

Later, when Johnny became too busy to take part, Raj still believed they could make it happen. So he approached Ant with the idea—even though it was so last minute.

Ant’s reply?
“So last minute? Yes, I’m in!” 😂

And somewhere along the way, Lucas ended up joining this crew of lovely, cool boys!

The choreography came together just six days before the performance, and the whole crew only got to rehearse together the day before the show.

That’s how “Soul Last Minute” came to life. ✨

And we loved every moment of it—the energy, the joy, and being silly together!

Thank you, Sarah, for getting the idea started; Johnny, for being part of those first plans; Raj & Anthony, for making it happen and creating the choreography; Adrian, for keeping our rehearsals focused and the energy high; and Elisha, for making time to join our rehearsal after your meeting, just one day before the show!
