Part 4: The Show Ontario Gothic

I will now directly discuss what inspired me to go on this long diverted jog, Ash Godley and Haley Meyer’s show Ontario Gothic, thoroughly and intelligently curated by Joshua Rogin. The show Ontario Gothic, takes tippy toe small steps into a large exhale. Ontario is herself in these paintings. Standing strong but not fully aware of the powers she holds. Hesitant to make too big a move and haunted by her grandmother's words. Godly paintings capture the sneakiness of Ontario, darkness forever until the automated porch light flashes on and shows you the door. Haley inmate soft touches feel eerie yet wanted. There in the basement of the plumb I see my home being recognized in a way I hadn't yet.

Defining the style by name over and over until we can give ourselves a name

By writing this I hope to give the term Southern Ontario Gothic a more solid foundation. I believe that paradoxically, the lack of identity in Southern Ontario is in fact what gives Ontario a very special haunted feeling. Although I can admit I am desperately trying to make this term work, I can say with confidence it feels like a potent descriptor of the visual output I am seeing come from the south of the province. I believe now all that is left is to use the term over and over again until it is simply undeniable. Even if it seems as though we live in a place where nothing has happened, which is not true of course - because nothing is always the result of something. We must stand with love and contempt on the land we live, breathe and die in.

TODAY: The 100th Soup Celebration episode!

I reached out to artists and previous co-hosts to send me voice notes and got back a lot more than I was expecting. Did I get emotional a few times when putting this together? Absolutely.

The playlist today are full of the artists I've played on every single round of the show, and will continue to do my best to get them in as much as possible. You're going to hear from:

@intarotgate , @spookeyruben , @queenofjeans , @royalwood
, @juliannariolinoofficial , @hannahgeorgas , @commonholly , @bluntchunks , @maitamusic , @honeycrush.online , @radiohead , @softcultband , @bossloganwpg and @crookediceband

Thank you to everyone who's listened, pretended they listened, wanted a sticker, sent me a message, left a comment, or sent me a song to be played. I keep doing this because it makes me happy to help artists in whatever way I can.
