275 episodes! How the hell did that happen?!

For episode 275 of Tailoring Talk Magazine I’m talking about something I’ve noticed after nearly a quarter of a century dressing men, and particularly the new clients who come to see me in their 40s and 50s.

Buying clothes seems to have become really bloody difficult.

Which makes absolutely no sense when you first think about it because surely it should be easier? You know yourself better, you know what you like, you’re probably in a position to spend more on your clothes than you were twenty years ago and you’ve had decades to work out what suits you.

Except your body has changed, fashion has changed, the way we’re expected to dress for work has completely changed and, perhaps most importantly, you’ve reached a point in your life where wasting half a Saturday trying on clothes that don’t fit properly just isn’t very high on your list of things you’d like to be doing.

I see this all the time with the men in these photographs and it’s one of the reasons my first conversation with a new client is never simply “what suit would you like?”

I need to understand the man standing in front of me now, what his life looks like, where he goes, who he sees, how his body behaves and what he actually needs his wardrobe to do for him because that’s the only way we can start making the whole thing easier.

I’ve gone into all of this in episode 275 of Tailoring Talk Magazine, which is out now wherever you get your podcasts, and there’s also a full article on the Roberto Revilla London blog if you’d rather read it.

And I’d love to know whether this has happened to you too. Has buying clothes become easier or harder as you’ve got older?

WHY DOES BUYING CLOTHES GET HARDER AFTER 40?

Surely it should be getting EASIER?

You’ve spent forty-odd years working out what you like, you’re probably earning more than you did at 25 and you’ve already survived most of your questionable fashion decisions.

So why does shopping suddenly become such a pain in the backside?

Your body changed. The clothes changed too.

Maybe you’re carrying a little more around the Man in his 60s wearing a smart casual tailored jacket with jeans, showing how men can dress stylishly and comfortably over 60 with modern tailoring and relaxed menswear.

The second in my series of Café Blah pieces about great but overlooked albums of the 1980s was published today.

Click the link in the bio, and you’ll be able to read my lengthy thoughts about Elvis Costello & The Attractions 1986 album, Blood & Chocolate.

Even better, download this hidden masterpiece and listen while you read along.
