banding little forest owls is my favorite hobby🧡

my boreal obsession started in my undergrad when I worked on researching detection protocols with @bmax_wildlife as a mentor. Then last year we caught one male and last night we caught two females! Many years ago @aegolius14 had the incredible accomplishment of catching the first, but unfortunately no data was ever turned in on the bird. That totals a very small number of 4 that have ever been caught in Utah, hopefully more to come🤞 Featuring some saw whets we also caught who were also well loved and doted on;)

I guess catching 8 Saw-whets last night makes up for missing 8 days of Owltober🦉

A little October appreciation post for some of my favorites 🦉🦇🌙

In honor of Owltober and Bat Appreciation Month, here are a few of my favorite fieldwork moments! Getting to work with owls and bats has given me a pretty good excuse to spend a lot of time outside after dark. I have a whole new appreciation for the wildlife that calls the night home. 🌙

Here’s to the owls, bats and all the adventures that come with working with them! 🖤

Do you know how many Blackfooted Ferrets exist in the wild? What a great privilege to observe these endangered creatures with Utah DWR in Northeast Utah! Thanks @keiffertm and @bmax_wildlife! It was a fantastic evening! @lizzymiss77 #blackfootedferret #utahwildlifephotographer #omsystem #wildlifephotography

celebrating international owl awareness day!!

been lucky enough to do some research and work hands on with such amazing critters. Owls are such special birds designed by years of specialized evolution! Today's the day to appreciate them! 🦉🦉🫶

Some of the coolest people Ive gotten the pleasure of working with in the years Ive done this are @aegolius14 now named spidermika, thank you for all you do for the flammulated owls and people who love them alike!! @bmax_wildlife thanks for all the incredible experiences!! Still chasing that boreal high.

Some great consideration and feedback on this quiz!
This nanny has above average thickness in her horn bases which can give the perception of billy-like mass. When goats are in their summer coats you can often see the scent gland (Supra-occipital gland) behind the horn, and can also be deceiving to those that believe only billies have scent glands.
With the second view the “kink” at the top of the horn is more pronounced. The third image provides the 100% verification of the vulva/udder of the nanny and the obvious lack of a scrotum if it were a billy.
If you’d been in the position of the photographer @bmax_wildlife and were observant of all the details of this individual, you could have been 100% positive that it was a female and chose to pass it in a hunting scenario where billies were recommended or required to harvest.

In keeping with some pre-season sex ID practice here is another opportunity to tune your skills.

Is this a billy or nanny? How confident are you? Would you need more supporting information?
What characteristics do you see to support your decision?
