POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A few weeks ago, Atlanta Film and TV’s Mandisa Johnson, sat down with Birmingham-based Casting Director, Producer, and Writer, Brandon McCray.

McCray has been involved in the entertainment industry since 1999 and says his biggest joys is helping people live out their dreams.

“When I get a breakdown sent to me, I’ll look at it and study it then start thinking in my mind, ‘who fits this?’ If I can’t think of anybody then I take the same route as anyone else and will go to Actor’s Access. Or, I will send out a mass email to actors in my network from across the country telling them what I am casting for and how to submit. “

He shares.

wwwRoadtoBlackNovember.com The Road to Black November is all about increasing Black Voter participation. We had a ball at the Kickoff community strategy session and celebration. We danced, had great food catered by Sylvia’s and our Founder, Cara McClure lit up the room with her fiery message on what’s at stake and how the work we do in the next 52 days can build statewide power and infrastructure. Thank you to @movement_labs_us for helping recruit over 150 volunteers ready to put in work in their own way. We are providing training for every role, phonebanking, canvassing, relational organizing, storytelling, texting, our data team, leadership development, etc. thank you to our new Road to Black November local influencers coalition for attending and becoming part of the team. @mommatiktok1 , Big China Davis, Courtney P, Stan Tarver and others.

Explore the story of Tuxedo Junction, the neighborhood, the place, and the song. A special part of Birmingham's Black history, The (Almost) Lost Story of Tuxedo Junction is a feature-length film that documents the rise and fall of this historic area and the musicians that came out of there, who they were, how they came to be, and why they should be remembered and celebrated.

Watch tonight at 8 PM on Alabama Public Television or stream on demand with the PBS App. #TuxedoJunction #BirminghamHistory #BlackHistory #AlabamaPublicTelevision

That’s where it all began. Tuxedo Junction — the neighborhood, the place, the song — is a special part of Alabama and American music history.

“[Tuxedo Junction] used to be the epicenter for Black Birmingham,” Producer Brandon McCray says. “People traveled from all over just to shop, eat, and dance, and just listen to music that would change the world.”

A documentary from Katie Rogers, Tuxedo Junction: The Almost Lost Story explores the legendary Ensley-based jazz venue Tuxedo Junction, highlighting the rich history of the famed building and its many incarnations for Black-owned businesses. The film also takes an insightful look at how Birmingham-born trumpeter and band leader Erskine Hawkins helped it become a worldwide musical icon after commemorating it in one of the most popular songs of the big band era.

“…History doesn’t disappear. It just waits for someone to remember it out loud,” McCray says.

As we kick off #blackhistorymonth I wanted to share the Youtube link (in bio) to our feature documentary “Gip” which tells an amazing story of how one can resist through Unity. And LOVE! And Music! As Mr. Gip used to say “No black, no white, only blues.” What a crazy adventure it was to spend those 3 (4?) years at Gip’s Place and to have documented the last few juke joints in America. Most are now gone. Check out the film if you haven’t! Crazy that we are over 330,000 views of this little labor of love! It premiered to a sold out crowd at @sidewalkfilm 10 years ago (!!) where it won the Jury Award for Best Alabama Film and the Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary Feature! It also won Best Sounds Feature at @indiememphis ! After a run on @pbs we decided during Covid to throw it online for everyone to enjoy. Huge thanks to the enormous group of musicians who shared their stories and songs! If you never got to visit Gip’s juke joint, we hope we captured its magic!
