Chillaxing, or in this case, is it chill-anchoring?

A long way from France, the 49-foot ADELA SOLOSAILOR🇫🇷 spent a few nights anchored off Halletts Cove Beach in Queens before heading north. With the soft light of the late afternoon sun, it was a good photo op with the boat’s positioning against the angles and background colors of the waterside industrial buildings, rusted dock gantries, and art sculptures on the pier.

Does anyone know the story behind the buildings and sculptures?

[👉 Update: Thank you to artist Daniel Hill (@kymatiko) for commenting that the sculptures are Mark di Suvero’s at his studio. While not doing justice to the artist, here is a quick recap. @markdisuvero is a visionary abstract expressionist sculptor and 2010 National Medal of Arts recipient. Living in NYC since 1957, he founded Astoria’s Socrates Sculpture Park in 1986, where a coalition of local artists led by Mark came with a vision to convert a dumpsite into an outdoor sculpture laboratory dedicated to up-and-coming artists. What a great gift to the community!]

Many thanks to @bmorash for sharing his knowledge and experience: “I anchored there one time just to test it out and the current tends to swirl around but not push you out into the river.” This area is Anchorage No. 14, designated by the USCG as a special anchorage area because of the current and river traffic; it’s subject to strict regulations and Vessel Traffic Service protocols.

This is why #Astoria residents or @nycferry passengers may see boats anchored in the cove at times, either to chill-anchor for the night, wait out the current until the tidal strait switches, or order in some delicious Astoria takeout from bUber Eats (boat Uber Eats).

Bon voyage, ADELA SOLOSAILOR🇫🇷!
