“ English “ 4 Canvas Collage *JACK THE VULTURE COLLECTION* This work responds to an attempt to appropriate Chinese culture through the creation of artificial, meaningless “AI Chinese characters devoid of all meaning”. As an ironic reflection, I mirror this act by appropriating all English letters and numbers, stripping them of their individual significance and compressing them into a single, stylized cool looking monogram 26 times. This gesture satirizes the process of aestheticizing a language causing it to be emptied historical of cultural and linguistic significance. The stained and weathered background reflects the bloodshed and broader impact of colonization, in which countless cultures around the world have been violently assimilated and stripped of their language and identity; only now to be appropriated for being “exotic” by the most institutionally powerful group in the world. The right to left descending composition of canvases recalls the traditional structure of Chinese reading, now disrupted by the worldwide imposition of Western linguistic standards, reading left to right. on a positive note, Happy first anniversary @karminebevacquacouture @karminebevacqua 🎉 love you homie fr Vancouver Artist lachlan hsu showcases new canvas collage titled “English”, representing the bloodshed of the chinese community at the hands of the western powers
