I really like how beautiful this boat has turned out. The man built this boat with refugees and the result is really impressive. The service to our society in this project should not be underestimated either. I was allowed to support the project with a colour job and am very happy with the result

IT’S A BOAT!
Photo: Sean Smuda

We would like to cordially and enthusiastically invite you to the exhibition and presentation of our yacht on Sunday, May 11 at 4pm. The event takes place within the context of Consider Listening, an exhibition and event series organized by the Haubrok Foundation at the Fahrbereitschaft.

After seven years, our motor yacht is finished! We will give a short talk revisiting the context, situation, and persistence of racism from which the boat making workshop originated. We will also address the project's conceptual aims and practical matters such as the boat's design, funding and future. Starting at 2pm, we offer personal tours of the boat’s intimate interior.

The Making Waves Boat Making Workshop for Refugees was initiated in 2016 by American artist Daniel Seiple with Syrian refugees Hanna Aljarada, Hassan Aji, Samir Al hajar, Walid Bara, Momtaz Dimahcki and Nafee Kurdi. Over 30 individuals from four continents have participated and collaborated in the boat’s construction, which will now be used to explore the region’s lakes and waterways.

More than just a workshop, Making Waves exists in conversation with media sensationalism, advertising and activism. Far from utopian, we aim to confront cultural and social conflict through artistic and personal means. The project has received support from the BBK Sculpture Workshop, Haubrok Foundation, Job Center Lichtenberg, State Office for Refugee Affairs Berlin and private sponsors.

Making a boat as an reappropriating act:
"We are building the boat ourselves now – of higher quality, with a good motor and features that make it safer than crossing the sea in a raft. I’ll remake the experience but in a good way. I’ll be at ease and unafraid. There are many safety features on a luxury boat. It will be a different experience.”

Making Waves is an artistic and activist project that project that invited refugees to build and use a motor yacht together.
From 2018 to 2025, the group built the boat in the BBK sculpture workshop, the FAHRBEREITSCHAFT, Lobe Berlin and the Bootshalle Lichtenberg. Part of the group, the American artist artist Daniel Seiple and the participants Hanna Aljarada, Hassan Aji, Samir Al Hajar, Walid Bara, Momtaz Dimahcki and Nafee Kurdi, will discuss the details of the construction, their backgrounds and the structure of the project at 4pm, 11 May 2025.
