Here is a selection of some of the most interesting tornadoes and storms I saw this past year. 2023 was a very active year for tornadoes in central Oklahoma. Cleveland County, where Norman is located, saw 13 tornadoes. I also got to participate in another field project this spring during a highly localized active stretch of supercells.

February 26 — Norman, Oklahoma: I took this video at the Traditions East Apartments storm shelter as a destructive tornado passed less than a mile to our south. This tornado was rated high-end EF-2 with 135 mph winds, and was on the ground for 27 miles.

April 19 — Cole, Oklahoma (1 video, 1 photo):
Less than two months after the Norman tornado, central Oklahoma experienced a significant outbreak of 18 tornadoes. The strongest tornado occurred less than 10 miles from OU, and was rated EF-3 with 150 mph winds. The video shows the tornado touching down and becoming established. The parent supercell is shown in the photo.

May 11 — Cole, Oklahoma (2 videos): Just three weeks after the EF-3, an EF-1 tornado touched down in almost the exact same location during an outbreak of 12 weak tornadoes. The first video shows the tornado at the beginning of its life cycle, and the second video shows the rapid touchdown and strengthening of another vortex.

May 23 — Muleshoe, Texas: The first official day of the 2023 TORUS-LiTE field project featured high-based supercells, but this inflow tail-like feature made for a cool photo.

May 24 — Grady, New Mexico: The third day of TORUS-LiTE operations featured one of the largest supercells I’ve seen, which produced this brief tornado. We measured a 93 mph wind gust 10 minutes later.

May 27 — Plains, Texas: On the fifth day of busy late May TORUS-LiTE operations, this supercell produced two weak tornadoes, hail, and strong winds.

July 12 — Glendale Heights, Illinois: An outbreak of 13 weak tornadoes occurred in northeastern Illinois. Shortly after an EF-0 lofted debris into the air, Bobby took this video of the chaotic mesocyclone and a few funnel clouds.

July 28 — Greendale, Wisconsin: This video shows the lightning-illuminated backside of a “left-moving” supercell moving out over Lake Michigan.
