Inheritance will always call us to remember ourselves and where we came from. No matter how much we run from it or pretend it does not exist, it will always show up in ways we least expect or ignite a fire in us that we cannot ignore.

In her upcoming solo exhibition, So Quick the Crocodile Has Eaten the Sun, Boemo Diale is thinking about the things inherited from her family, particularly through maternal structures and the women who raised her.

Join us from 11am until 2pm on Saturday 10 October for the opening of Boemo Diale’s latest solo exhibition.

“There’s an old Tswana description of time that might make you think a little differently about the moon next time you look at it: each day ends with a crocodile eating the sun and excreting the moon. It’s an image that has pressed on Boemo Diale’s mind for quite some time. So what does she see when she looks up at the night sky?

“I wrote a little story about the passing of time in relation to Tswana cosmology and other indigenous cosmologies,” she says. “And also looking at maternal knowledge.”

The result of that story – along with a lot of painting and the making of ceramic vessels – is a new exhibition titled So Quick the Crocodile Has Eaten the Sun.”

We all gathered in the name of art again.

The people of Jozi are beautiful.

Great conversations.

Artists we’re loving: Boemo Diale (@boemodiale)

“Born in 2000 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Boemo Diale is a multi-disciplinary artist who grew up navigating different racial and socio-political structures in Rustenburg and the suburbs of Johannesburg as a young woman.

As an exploration of identity, generational trauma, dreams and manifestations, the artist’s practice is both highly personal and speaks to the broader cultural inheritance of South African women.”

Art Collecting begins long before acquisition.

It starts with curiosity, attention, and the works that stay with you long after you’ve left the room.

Here are five works we found ourselves thinking about after RMB Latitudes Art Fair.

Life is currently life-ing at Olympic level, but I needed a break from my cave of submissions and deadlines.

So I went to latitudes solo.

I was anxious for about five seconds. Then I remembered that one of my favourite things in the world is getting lost in museums by myself.

Honestly, Latitudes felt like a sport. You needed water. Focus. Stamina and a solid game plan. Somewhere near the end my brain was so overstimulated I genuinely needed to tap out.

What a privilege 🥹

The art. The storytelling. The sheer audacity of African creativity.

We’re creating at a level that’s difficult to explain and impossible to ignore.

Thank you Nike South Africa for the invitation and for bringing the air max residency into this space. Catching it in this form felt poetic.

Anyway. Back to the cave.

Back to submissions.
Back to exams.
Back to becoming.
