Being proud of who I am, especially in the city we live in, is extremely important. Every day, even in the year 2026, we are fighting for our visibility, our individual right to expression, our protections from hatred, and our ability to become the most authentic version of ourselves.

Dressing up in a skirt and disco patterns, using two full bottles of pink hair dye, and smothering myself in body glitter are all things I do extremely intentionally. 🫵 I am not always in an insane, flamboyant, “gay” outfit. I am so much more than what I present externally when I so wish. I go to work, I get food, spend time with friends, exercise, relax, go to family celebrations, vacations, trips, and dates… I am the same as them. Yet so many people see someone like me, expressing themselves, or being in love, or becoming themselves for a night or a lifetime… and cannot help but express their distaste and hatred for our authenticity.

This weekend, I was given so many compliments and lovely wishes by members of my community. I was shown love and I was shown acceptance. I was also shown malice, and anger, and hurt from others outside of my circle: accosted on the street, yelled at by a stranger in a car, or scowled at by a passerby on the sidewalk. A group of men my age, wearing baseball hats and tennis shoes, threatened me. However, let me tell you all ONE thing I know to be certainly true:

They will never, not once in their life, happen to find the joy and love I’ve found doing exactly what I’m doing. I get to look this crazy and this exciting, because I’ve fought for 24 years to get to this spot. And if an outfit is driving them that crazy, JOIN THE CLUB. My friends and my chosen family go crazy every time I step through a doorway, with admiration and love. So come at me, yell at me, tear me down and I will ALWAYS come back with more fcking glitter and more eyeshadow, and more ridiculous outfits.

Pride began as a celebration to force others to recognize what it means to be anything other than the status quo. It is imperative that we continue to stand up, stay loud, and hold our ground. I love all of you!
