What I wore for last night’s premiere of #fromsagawithlove2

Last year, I wore a kimono jacket for the first season’s premiere so I wanted to do something different this time. Got this kimono-inspired suit dress from @lovebonito_my which I have not worn in a while. It has open slits so I layered a skirt inside to keep it more modest. My choice of accessories are firstly the ‘paun’ gold coins which we typically wear with our Kadazan-Dusun attires in Sabah. My tangkong earrings are made by @cathneyna (love them so much) and I also have these beaded Rungus bangles to add a touch of colour to my look. Finally, I of course never leave the house without my brass bangles, a staple in my everyday look. These are matching sets which I have from @saringsociety @jessboubie_craft

My bag is made by @bokyart using bemban which is typically used as basket weavery material by the Iban community in Sarawak. I suppose this look is a reflection of my cultural heritage from both my parents’ sides. A little rojak but I’m proud to be representing my Bornean identity.

Indoor Judging Outfit

This capsule collection is themed as “Native to Fashion”

The major materials are bemban. In this collection, it is strong silhouette with contrast colour of gold and black. It is designed to be contemporary looking but in traditional material 🤍🫶🏻

Reason of choosing this art, I want to showcase the uniqueness in Malaysia, not just promoting Sabah culture, but also supporting Sarawak art as well, even culture in Semenanjung.

The idea of this collection is to bring inspiration and create awareness to promote the beautiful culture of Iban Sarawak. When we think of Iban we will automatically think of pua kumbu, but not many of us know about bemban.

Bemban is a plant that is commonly used by the Iban people in Sarawak. It involves a lot of effort from harvesting to weaving. The artisans weave it to become a mat (tikar) or a basket (bakul).The main material we used in this collection are also bemban because this material represents the arts and crafts of the Iban people in Sarawak. We decided to apply innovation in fashion to create awareness to this traditional material.

In addition to this, we also want to create costume designs that empower women. As we know that bemban mats are actually produced by women. The weaver weaves by hand for days. To us, they are like a warrior working very hard to sustain their tradition. We came up with the idea of making it as a collection to represent 'women power' just like Wonder Woman and other female superheroes in action movies. We believe that a strong silhouette from the corset can bring attention that matches the women empowering concept. Thus, makes this collection a strong and meaningful one.

From sketches to final fittings — the most important part of a wardrobe styling process is the fitting itself. Sometimes, the looks we plan may turn out not as how we imagine them to be for various reasons.

Since we were working during an ongoing pandemic, unfortunately time did not permit us to customise all of the looks for Warrior Spirit MV from scratch. We experimented with creativity by injecting modification to the looks we were working with which we either loaned from designers or used from our own wardrobe archives. Our process included altering pieces to fit @alenamurang and designing and creating our own accessories to complement the ensembles.

Here's a fun fact, we were initially supposed to do only three looks for the MV as per the sketches above. Luckily, @sarahloisjoseph decided that we could do more as we progressed and needless to say, we were more than happy to oblige. That's why we ended up creating 12 looks for Alena and 2 looks for the bandmates. Which one is your favourite?

The director of Warrior Spirit MV @sarahloisjoseph 's vision was to have @alenamurang decked in strong and vibrant fashion-forward ensembles that are conspicuously Bornean to manifest a symbol of an ethnic female warrior in our modern times. The use of traditional accessories plays an important role in this.

Three of the statement looks that we have created included @artbok_ 's works of art. When we first laid eyes on their collection pieces, it was as if we had found a hidden gem. We reached out to @bokbokpow and he kindly flew in his pieces all the way from Sarawak for us to style with despite the ongoing pandemic. Here's a backstory on the collection.

Cant wait to show you my Final Year Project. This Project is inspire from Iban Bemban weaving, it is an traditional weaving woven from a plant called "Bemban". Bemban are usually weave to function as basketry and floor mat etc. Then I decided to make a twist and implement this precious traditional craft of Sarawak Malaysia into contemporary fashion.
