what. a. TOUR!!! i wrapped my VEG EVERYTHING book tour on sunday and im still trying to figure out how any of that was real. 10 cities! so many new friends!! 1 best-seller!!!!

there is something so overwhelming — disorienting, really — about meeting hundreds of people who find meaning and humor and DINNER in your work. i will never recover, and i will be eternally grateful to have spent the last three weeks in so many incredible indie bookshops meeting so many thoughtful, genuine and funny readers. thank you to everyone who took time out of their day to hang out with me! i can’t stop thinking about the woman in detroit who said she has a weekly calendar reminder for when the Veggie sends. i love her and she should be my editor. detroit is the greatest city in america.

an immense thank you to kristin casemore at @tenspeedpress for pulling off the tour of my dreams! thank you @booklarder and @cannellevanille for the warmest, most perfect kick off event in seattle! to @omnivorebooks and @mackenzie_fegan in SF, where I took my first waymo! (zero stars.) to the dreamy @vivienneculinarybooks and @culinarybreedingnetwork in portland, where everyone was somehow an old or internet friend! to @nowservingla and the fine people at @thehfm in LA, and to the singer miguel who stood by our popup and confirmed he was in fact the singer miguel!

to @booksaremagicbk @publicrecordsnyc and @andybaraghani and @scaachi back home in brooklyn for an event so funny i wondered if id get in trouble! to the ladies at @samedaybeautifulcakes for the most wonderful afterparty cake! to the @newcanaanlibrary and @elmstreetbooks for hosting my first IRL demo in new canaan! to @vesperbooksandwine and @chefmikeransom for the warm welcome in detroit, where the djs know what the hell they’re doing! to @bindingagents and @han_nuh_duh in philadelphia, where we had some of the most creative event moderating in history (match this song to a recipe perfect game)! to @boldforkbooks @eatatelle and @robrubba for perhaps the most memorable event (my hair is ok) in dc! and finally to @acappellabooks and @kimseverson in atlanta, where we piled into a cozy room and vegged everything despite the rain. 💚

See you again never, September. You were full of beautiful people, moments, and things. And still, too much closure and change.

I made chicken pot pie tonight and used sage and oregano from the pots outside @boldforkbooks, tended by friendly neighborhood gardener Naseem (someone tag him in the comments!).

I will have the creative spirit to do a special BFB tribute at some point. But, for now, this was my September.

I still remember the first time I visited @boldforkbooks and bought my first cookbook: Bread is gold, by @massimobottura and friends, which featured

By then, I had already started cooking more seriously, and living in Washington DC, I also started venturing out of my comfort foods to dive into the multiple cuisines of the world I had only seen on the Discovery Channel’s Globetrotters show.

Since that first visit and purchase, BFB slowly became my favorite place in DC; the embodied idea of community, conversations and culture expansion across culinary literature.

It was where I met friends, exchanged ideas and learned about food writing. It was where I challenged my notions and cemented what I have discovered in my journey: that food is the anchor that holds all of us immigrants tied by an invisible threat, and that cooking is how we stay connected to an idea of home that we’re constantly searching for and trying to configure in our minds.

It’s where I took friends to share the magic of cooking with the excitement of a little kid showing you their favorite toys, and where others bought me great gifts (looking at you @preetiwaas 💛).

It’s the place where I sent my first pitch to moderate an event with MAJOR cookbook authors that showed me what was possible for my career as well.

There wasn’t a single time when I didn’t leave more inspired, fulfilled, well-fed, and most importantly, where my inner kid who loved sitting down at bookstores when I was younger felt she had found a space that perfectly aligned with my current adult self and her passions.

Their closing is a devastating loss for a city and community that continues to lose unique, unrepeatable spaces to give way to others that just make us look like every other American city. But what @clemthomas2 @samknowsthatsright, as well as @brindapen @jnohood, Elizabeth, @lailamaghathe and the rest of the team achieved is nothing short of incredible, and one can only hope that their creative energy continues to pour and expand for this city and beyond.

Thanks to you, my bookshelf is now a bit larger, more diverse, and has made me a better chef (swipe to see the overflow).

Going to miss @boldforkbooks so much. Bold Fork has been such a gem in D.C. for the last 6 years!

Anyone who knows me knows that macaroni and cheese is my favorite food, so obviously when I saw that Bold Fork Books was hosting a talk about the entire history of mac and cheese, I had to go. 🧀📚

I learned that apparently mac and cheese haters have been around for centuries. How rude!

The bittersweet part, Bold Fork Books is closing September 30. If you’ve been meaning to visit, this weekend is a particularly good time! Everything is 20% off Saturday and Sunday, plus they’ll have food and drink pop-ups.

And if the mac and cheese history is what got you, Karima Moyer-Nocchi will be at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History on October 2 for another talk and demonstration.

I’m very glad I got to experience one of Bold Fork’s final events and obviously came home with the book. 🧀

I don’t think this kid could’ve imagined where all that writing would eventually take him.

In one week, Fundamentals of Flavor will be out in the world, and I’m taking it on the road.

Almost two years ago, I snuck up to DC for a quick weekend to visit a dear friend and a top priority was getting over to @boldforkbooks to explore its collection of books dedicated to food! It’s a cookbook dreamland and so chef-y with the its masking tape+ sharpie labeled shelves.

I’m so sad to hear that it’s closing at the end of the month. If you have the chance to shop its shelves and experience its magic this month, get yourself over there!

You’ll be missed @boldforkbooks, thanks for being a happy place to get lost in words about food.
