Why Gold and Silver Are Soaring to All-Time Highs

Gold and silver hit all-time highs amid geopolitical tensions and trade worries. Indian prices soared, with strong demand and silver outperforming gold.

Gold and silver prices advanced to all-time high on Wednesday (January 21), driven by heightened geopolitical tensions, trade policy concerns and currency movements that reinforced demand for safe-haven assets.

In global markets, spot gold rose about 0.8% to around $4,806 an ounce, crossing the $4,800 mark for the first time, while silver gained roughly 0.4% to $95.01 an ounce, hovering near its all-time high of $95.87.

Analysts attributed the rally to persistent risk aversion amid renewed trade threats and geopolitical uncertainty.

In India, bullion prices mirrored the global surge. Gold of 99.9% purity traded at around ₹1.53 lakh per 10 grams (inclusive of taxes) in the national capital.

Silver prices jumped nearly 7% in a single session to about ₹3.23 lakh per kilogram, after crossing the ₹3-lakh mark earlier in the week.

What is O visa, and who is eligible to apply?

The O-1 visa, popularly known as America’s “genius visa”, is experiencing increased interest as uncertainty surrounding the H-1B program intensifies. Recent statistics from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USIS) suggest that O-visa approvals reached 39,000 in 2025, marking the highest figure observed in recent years.

Meanwhile, H-1B applications from major IT service companies such as Wipro, TCS, and Cognizant have significantly declined. In addition, the issuance of O-3 dependent visas has also risen, hitting 6,035 in 2024, which reflects the broader trend towards O-1 visas.

According to Beyond Border, an immigration platform based in the US and Bengaluru, O-1 visas consistently achieve approval rates exceeding 90 percent across various administrations.

What is O visa, and who is eligible to apply?
The O visa is a non-immigrant category designated for people who can prove extraordinary ability in their respective fields. It is divided into two primary classifications, including O-1A visa.

The O-1A visa is designed for individuals who possess extraordinary abilities in the fields of science, education, business, or athletics.

Applicants must furnish proof of ongoing recognition at a national or international level. This route is commonly pursued by researchers, senior academics, startup founders, senior executives, data scientists, and top-tier athletes. It is crucial to emphasize that this category does not encompass the arts and entertainment fields. Applicants are required to demonstrate their “extraordinary ability” by providing a record of continuous acclaim at either a national or international scale.

Is there an annual limit for the O visa?
The O-1 visa neither has an annual limit, nor it necessitates a particular educational background. Visa holders are permitted to work simultaneously for multiple employers.
The two primary categories are:

While O-1A is for people in science, education, business, and athletics, O-1B is for those in the arts, as well as the motion picture and television sectors.

Why Donald Trump wants to take control of Greenland?

Strategic Military Importance

Greenland sits between North America and Europe, making it critical for monitoring Russia and China in the Arctic.

The U.S. already has Thule Air Base there, important for missile defense and space surveillance.

Control of the Arctic Region
As Arctic ice melts, new shipping routes and military access are opening.
The U.S. wants to prevent rivals from dominating the Arctic.

Natural Resources
Greenland has vast untapped reserves of rare earth minerals, oil, gas, and uranium, which are vital for technology and defense.
Reducing dependence on China for rare earths was a major concern.

Economic & Trade Routes
Melting ice could make Arctic routes shorter and cheaper than traditional sea routes like the Suez Canal.
Control would give the U.S. economic advantages in future global trade.

Countering China’s Influence
China has shown interest in investing in Greenland’s infrastructure and mining.
Trump wanted to block China’s long-term strategic foothold.

Historical Precedent
The U.S. has tried to buy Greenland before (1867, 1946).
Trump viewed it as a real estate-style strategic purchase.

Strengthening U.S. Global Power
Acquiring Greenland would expand U.S. territory and influence, reinforcing America’s role as a global superpower.

Somaliland: In a historic move on December 26, 2025, Israel became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent republic. Somaliland, officially the Republic of Somaliland, is a partially recognised state in the Horn of Africa. It is located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden and bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Ethiopia to the south and west, and Somalia to the east.

Israel has officially recognised Somaliland, becoming the first country in the world to do so. This marks a major diplomatic milestone for the self-declared state in the Horn of Africa.

On Friday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel and Somaliland have signed a joint declaration to establish full diplomatic relations. Netanyahu described the agreement as being aligned with the Abraham Accords, the U.S.-brokered framework that normalised Israel’s relations with several Arab nations.

However, within hours of the announcement, Somalia’s government condemned the decision, calling it an “illegal act” that violates its sovereignty. Somalia reiterated that Somaliland is an “inseparable” part of its territory and accused Israel of undermining its unity.

Somaliland has operated as a de facto independent state since declaring separation from Somalia in 1991. Despite functioning with its own government and institutions, it has never been formally recognised by any UN member country — until Israel’s announcement. The territory is located in the northwestern region that was formerly the British Protectorate in northern Somalia.

Somalia continues to reject any claim of Somaliland’s independence.
