Crossing that finish line I felt proud in a way I’ve never felt before. 118 miles gave me time to process the last 8 years and finally see how far I’ve come.

Every night I went to bed with a heart more full than the day before. Grateful for the rawness each stage brought. From singletrack to some unforgiving Idaho gravel, to endless miles where the views literally took my breath away from effort and the view itself.

Racing with friends all bonding through a shared sense of suffering and joy found in proving there is no limit to what’s possible.

5 days of healing my heart. Learning to trust my body again, believing in who I am the way others see me. Having others believe in you matters, thank you @rebeccarusch and @aerahh I truly didn’t know how much I needed this week. My @begoodfoundation fellows are some of the greatest friends to make these memories with.

Here’s to dreaming big and loving wildly, on and off the bike. May the joy, passion, and courage we find on the bike continue to reverberate through everything we do, in our day to day lives and into our communities.

Hear no eagle, see no eagle, speak no eagle, just be a googly-eyed weirdo eagle, that’s how the saying goes right? My alter eagle weirdo self had a friggin blast at @rebeccasprivateidaho last week, trying to be good and definitely being weird.
We’d been wanting to come do RPI for a while, and when @salsacycles was sponsoring it, it became an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. Rebecca shared her beautiful private Idaho roads and views with us, and I got to meet and ride with some friggin great folks from all over. Meadow from Utah, Sipma, Miky and Jacob from Colorado, Mary from North Carolina, Goose from NJ, Meg from Montana, Deb from all the cool spots, and so many others.
And getting to hang with the awesome Salsa crew was the friggin cherry on top. So grateful they drove the chaise all the way out here so every last rider could sit down and get their photo taken, even the weird bird on the Warbird 😂. I was genuinely honored to share that seat with you all. Thank you guys so much for being just the best and letting me join in the Salsa family fun, so lucky to know each one of you!
Thanks so much to my favorito of all @attackeracker . We’ve done some epic road trips in the 12 years together, but it had been a while and this was definitely worth it and long overdue. I love getting to explore this world with ya, thanks for planning and organizing and sharing the experience with me, it’s fun learning even more new things about eachother and thanks for putting up with all my quirks, making new memories that I’m sure I’ll annoy later by misremembering hehe
10/10 would be a weird eagle again. It was Capital! 🦅😂

One unfortunate act- stealing @zacharylallison and my bikes- was met with a cascade of kindness at @rebeccasprivateidaho.

We were both kinda frozen just waiting for a next step when @rebeccarusch gave us the opportunity to still race- me using her bike, her neighbor offering a bike for Zack, @desherick getting us set up fast, @bikemonkey graciously delaying the start, and the @blainecountysheriffidaho literally showing up to the start to take our statements. The weekend of kindness continued with @bolmj’s @garmincycling mount, @gerardcycles setting me up for Saturday and Sunday, @envecomposites / @neilshirley1 sending out a bike for @zacharylallison, and more kind messages, words, and advice than I can count. Although the theft is disheartening, my faith in humanity is still as strong as ever ❤️

It takes just a few minutes to see the energy @rebeccarusch brings to her region, which creates a rich culture of care and generosity (and the @begoodfoundation of course). That culture elevates everyone, irregardless of status or ability. It’s good and the world needs more of that. Thanks for letting us be on the receiving end of that this weekend ❤️

The Be Good Foundation is all about using the bicycle for healing, empowerment, and evolution—but this year at @rebeccasprivateidaho, we took it up a notch with the first-ever Potato Olympics! 🥔 And it was definitely evolutionary AND empowering in all the best ways!

Teams of two showed up ready to dig into some smashing fun—arriving in the most spud-tacular costumes, throwing on their game faces, and diving headfirst into a day of laughter, friendly competition, and a whole lot of potato-powered ridiculousness. (Oh, and there were bikes too, promise 😉)

Sometimes a little silliness is just the healing we all need.

What a whirlwind of a race. RPI is worth doing at least once for the scenery, the atmosphere, and fantastic courses. This year, the race had one of the biggest para fields that I have ever seen at any race. Thank you so much to RPI, Mike Monkey, and the Be Good Foundation! Can't wait to be back in the future.

Para QSR race recap below!

I went into the Baked Potato with 2 goals:
#1 See how long I could ride with the pro field up Trail Creek
#2 And hold off Justin as long as I can to hopefully win the QSR

#1 After the neutral roll out, we were rolling at 15mph. Justin and I decided to liven things up and the two of us attacked the field at the base of the climb. For a few glorious moments, it was two para guys with a slight gap on the pro field. After the pros decided to kick things into gear, Justin started pacing himself and I held on for dear life for a minute or so before getting dropped and settling into a more reasonable pace.

#2 Stage 1 of RP| was unfortunately canceled due to the Waiti wildfire. So we started the stage race with stage 2, a 4.5 mi hill climb time trial. Which I was perfectly happy with. I burnt myself up that climb and managed to win the stage with ~6 minute gap going into the Baked Potato. Fast forward to the Baked Potato, after reaching the summit of Trail Creek, I had a 6-7 minute gap on Justin. I had to stop at aid station 3 (~mile 32) where Justin had made up enough time on the first descent to pass me. I caught up to him a few minutes later and we ended up riding together until mile 52. The entire time, I was doing the calculus in my head. At that point, there was way more descending than climbing so it was just an effort to minimize the damage. And of course, once we hit the main descent in the Copper Basin, Justin disappeared into the horizon. I was struggling with my HR the entire race due to elevation and it didn't go into threshold the entire 7 hour effort. Justin managed to gain enough time to win the overall QSR for the para men! Congrats, that was a well deserved win. I ended up finishing second, both for the day and overall. Definitely need to train at elevation more.

One of the main parts I enjoy about gravel events is getting to catch up with old friends and getting to meet new ones. Until next time!

#MentalHealthMonday check-in: How are you doing?

My check in: Picking a topic for this post was surprisingly challenging because I’m overcome with so many emotions after @rebeccasprivateidaho. The inevitable “post-event hangover” feeling has left me with some sadness and a LOT of gratitude. I stepped away from my regular tasks for a few days to be able to immerse myself in the week’s events completely, rather than feeling like I had to keep all the balls in the air simultaneously. Being untethered and disconnected for a few days was freeing; I was present to make new friends, to say “yes” to things like watching a huge parade (with camels!), getting cheese wiz sprayed up my nose during the “Potato Olympics”, and playing (and winning🥇) a chaotic drinking game with strangers.

Unfortunately, the curse of “vacation” is such that stepping away leaves me with the dread that I’m behind on every other task in my life, all because I dared to take time away to reset, reconnect, and explore a new-to-me place with Joe as fully as possible. Sometimes vacation feels a bit like regret and self-loathing.

Most notably, I’m behind on social media updates that I’ve been dying to share from RPI because it was such a magical, phenomenal experience. I hate posting things days after they’ve happened, but it strikes me that people I admire do it all the time. So why not me? Who says I can’t post things a little later? This is one of those great examples of “my life, my rules.”

So, today’s post is a shameless plug for vacations. Work will always exist, but being burned out benefits no one. Taking time to explore new places, meet new people, and reconnect with things that matter in my life is restorative and essential for me. I suspect it is for you, too❤️.

I hope you’re hanging in there today and everyday. If you’re struggling, PLEASE talk to someone about it. Talking about your feelings opens the space for others to share comfortably too. I promise there’s no shame in asking for help.
