I don’t share this to explain Venezuela. I share this to explain what it meant to leave for each of us:

Like more than 9 million Venezuelans, I didn’t just leave a country.
I left birthdays I watch through a screen.
Funerals I couldn’t attend.
First steps I only saw in videos.

I left the ordinary nights with my family—the loud ones, the silly ones, the ones you never think you’ll miss until they’re gone.
I left the sunshine that greeted me every morning.
I left home.

I missed the last months of my dad’s life.
And that is a grief that never settles.

This is about loss.
It’s about distance.
It’s about loving a country that was taken away from you, piece by piece.

All we ask now is empathy.
For the ones who left.
For the ones who stayed.
For the pieces of us that never made it back.
