What do you do while the flags sit and wait? If you said hole hopping and jigging for schools of panfish you’re on it!

We spent most of our time moving around following some very active fish. Anywhere from 6-9 feet adjacent to the weedline seemed to hold fish morning, noon, and night. But they never seemed to stay in the same hole for more than a few drops.

My two best baits for attracting bluegill and crappie were a 1/16oz @clamoutdoors pinhead minnow pro and the tungsten scud missile jig from @widow_maker_lures. The biggest bluegill award went to @bonzo1818 who landed this beautiful 10incher on a pinhead minnow.

Congrats on the awesome fish and new PB bluegill!

The first morning of first ice is always something special. I hit the ice at first light with @bonzo1818 to try a new to me spot.

We spent a little bit drilling holes, checking depths, and setting up our first spread. Did some hole hopping and found the bluegill right away. The bass showed up not too long after! The key was moving baits and lots of action. The bass were clearly on the hunt.

Jeff hooked a couple of nice bass jigging and we got a flurry of flags around mid morning that sent us all running. Always a great time to share time on the ice with great people. Looking forward to the rest of the season!

Took some time to narrow down the depth, but after nailing pike and bass in deeper water it was time to find the shallow weeds to track down the walleye.

You could tell which flag went up for a walleye by watching the spin of the spool. The walleye would take some line on the initial hit, but most would stop and sit for up to a minute before moving off slowly.

Absolute blast chasing these all morning, adjusting our spread, and having it pay off!

We were talking on Friday night how we’ve never gotten a smallie on the ice at this lake. Well, we fixed that problem on Saturday!

@bonzo1818 landed his first smallmouth ever on the ice within the first 5 minutes on Saturday morning. Barely walked away from the hole when the flag popped. Mine also came on a tip up later in the day. I’ve caught lots of bass on the hardwater, but that’s the first smallmouth for me as well!

Pike and bass kept us busy most of the morning. Pike were holding on the outside of shallow weedlines while the bass were cruising around a few feet deeper. Only downside to Saturday was the sustained winds of 12-15mph. But we had plenty of flags to keep us warm and moving.

Spent a weekend out on the ice in the Northwoods with @bonzo1818 chasing anything that swims.

First day of the trip saw our single largest flag total with over a dozen flags popping during our first afternoon on the ice. Pike were super aggressive taking baits and going on some massive runs. We also landed a few nice bonus bass as well.

The bite stayed hot until just after sunset with our last flag coming just after moonrise. That made for a pretty sweet picture!

Saturday morning in the Northwoods was mostly panfish, but we managed a few toothy critters as well!

Had 6 flags pop throughout the morning, but only stuck these two. We had gear out covering a decent area, but in typical ice fishing fashion, both pike came on the same tip-up. Find the weeds, find the fish!

Couldn’t ask for a better backdrop for hole-hopping and chasing flags.

Northwoods ice fishing adventure started off interestingly enough.

After getting to the cabin on Friday afternoon, @bonzo1818 and I spent an hour or so digging a path to get the side-by-side out onto the lake, only to immediately get it stuck in a snowdrift right at the shore. Que the next hour or so digging that back out…

After all that we decided to call it with the wheels and just walk out. Luckily, we were rewarded with some nice panfish right at sunset. Tons of small perch, but a couple of chunky bluegill!

Like they say, hard work pays off! A memorable start to an awesome weekend!

Little fish for some BIG smiles! They don’t all have to be giants when you’re fishing with a great crew.

Best part of the ice season so far has been the people I’ve been lucky enough to get to share it with.

Chasing flags, dropping floats, and making memories; one day on the ice at a time!

Here it is folks, @mr.ehmen ‘s first ever tip up largemouth! 🎉🎣

Absolutely epic day on the ice today! We had 3 flags and 2 fish landed in the first 10 minutes of fishing. The bite was on!

We caught bass on just about everything today. Had a few take jigging-raps, a few take rippin-raps, a few take jigs with minnows, and a bunch of tip-up bites on shiners and fatheads.

Even with a cold wind and few snow flurries; Couldn’t really ask for a better day on the ice. Good times with a great crew!

Today was a panfish kind of day! Spent an awesome day on the ice chasing bluegill, bass, and even some crappie with a great crew!

The hot bite was all bluegill though. We saw a few real nice ones come through the ice today. Super fun chasing the schools around the lake. They never seemed to stay in one place for more than a few bites.

For me, the ticket was a @widow_maker_lures silver disco ball jig tipped with a waxy. Love watching that float drop!

The first weekend of ice fishing season is in the books! ☑️

Spent an awesome, albeit super cold, day out on the ice with @bonzo1818 chasing bass and bluegill.

After 3 very cold and windy days to start the season, I am very impressed with my new @eskimoicefishinggear Keeper bibs. Super comfortable, lots of pockets, and most importantly, super warm.

I also picked up a few insulated tip ups from @frabillfishing and they have been a game changer! Love not having to chisel the hole back open every time. Big bonus: they catch fish!

2022 ice season is off to a great start!
