Over the last week, I’ve wanted to tell you a story. I need more time to get it right, but time is not on my side, so I’ll tell it the best I can and hope that you’ll follow along.

There was once an old woman who lived in a house perched on a perilous hill, surrounded by coyotes and raccoons and opossums and shaded by loquat trees. She loved animals and fed them generously. They came to her for help: a white cat painted black with a severed tail named Ralph, a giant white floof named Biggie who haunted her door in the dead of night, so elusive I thought he was a phantom. We worked together fixing feral cats and rejoiced when we found a friendly kitty a home.

Her animals were the center of her world. She doted and fussed. Every night, they gathered in a circle to say the Lord’s Prayer. When she grew infirm, housebound and bedridden, it was a mighty struggle to care for her merry band of creatures: Megan (a golden retriever), Cindy (ginger tabby sidekick) and Nikki (Cindy’s daughter). Saintly neighbors pitched in, struggling themselves to manage it all. “God will provide for my animals,” she said, standing half naked before me as I applied lidocaine patches to her ribs and tentatively mentioned the future. “Or maybe you can?” she ventured. A moment of supreme vulnerability from a proud woman. So tender and trusting. An honor to be asked.

Last week, I got a call that she had been in the hospital for a week and wasn’t coming home. Megan, the dog, was alone in the empty house with her teddy bear, confused and mourning. Home health aides had ejected the cats. I found Cindy on the hillside, but Nikki was missing.

True to its name, @maedayrescue answered the call within 24 hours, sending a wonderful foster to collect Megan. A kind neighbor who helped out with the animals stepped in to give Cindy a temporary home. They are safe. I am still searching for Nikki, setting traps and trail cameras and praying that she’s still alive.

One year ago today I held her in my arms, told her I loved her- told her how f'ing strong she was and how damn grateful I was to have spent 2 years with her. She was everything good about dogs. Her resilience and kindness was like nothing I had ever witnessed first hand. She was one of the most trusting, loyal, and forgiving dogs I had/have ever met and if you had seen her at the Carson Shelter with an old metal chain attached to her emaciated body and her eyes sealed shut with infection you better believe she had no reason to be the way she was. She could have/should have been a huge asshole...but she wasn't. Far from it. She was magic. Her past did not define her and her will to live (and thrive) was a testament to her greatness. She was spectacular! One year ago today I said goodbye to my sweet, sweet friend.
