Not my best month as I struggled with a reading slump. In the first half of June, the majority of books read were under ⭐⭐⭐⭐ for me. Still, there were a few standouts. #bibliophile #bookshelf #booksofinstagram #bookworm #bookstagram

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In the “A Bread Shop Mystery” series, we follow Ivy Culpepper as she returns to her childhood hometown of Santa Sofia, California after the sudden death of her mother. Upon her arrival home, Ivy immediately finds a mentor in Olaya Solis, a local bakery owner, who helps her navigate her grief through bread-making classes. When a local woman is found murdered outside of the bakery, Ivy decides to become an amateur detective and take on the case. Through the eight books of the series, we see Ivy solve not only this mystery but many more, all while forming relationships with her fellow Santa Sofia residents.

Overall, these are very solid cozy mysteries. They have all the tropes I love in cozies - a beachy, coastal town; quirky townspeople; and a sweet romance subplot. Ivy’s crime-solving neighbor Mrs. Branford has quickly become one of my favorite book sidekicks, and the motherly role Olaya takes on for her was a lovely addition. Don’t get me started on the relationship between Ivy and her boyfriend Miguel. Their second chance romance was incorporated into the story just enough to have it be a cute subplot to follow but doesn’t overwhelm the actual mysteries. I also loved that we got to see the central characters in every book and the author didn’t pick and choose who showed up and when.

My favorites of the series were “A Murder Yule Regret” (you can never go wrong with a holiday story) and “Flour in the Attic” (this was shockingly complex and tragic for a cozy mystery). I really hope there are more books coming in this series because the ending of the eighth book was a little less conclusive than I would have liked. Otherwise, this was a great cozy mysteries series with books that would make great beach reads!

📚📖BOOK REVIEW📖📚 House of Spells and Secrets by Ivy Cassidy
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫An enchanting witchy story of sisters growing together in knowledge and magic after the death of their mother. Following clues, they end up at what seems to be their ancestral home and enter into the biggest mystery of all. The relationship between the sisters is paramount to the story as they deepen their connection to one another and strengthen their magical gifts. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And is there a sequel, perhaps? #houseofspellsandsecrets #bibliophile #booksofinstagram #bookworm
