Some of my favs from the esteemed New York Review Books Classics. I absolutely challenge you not to agree that these are memorable. Are you obsessed with NYRB? Which would you add to this collection? First book to left is Tropic Moon by Simenon. #nyrbooks #nyrbclassics #collectingnyrb #nyrbsummer

Books I read in January 1- The True Story of Raja the Gullible (and his Mother) by Rabih Alameddine. A beautiful writing about a heartbreaking situation. Lebanon during the civil war, port explosion, pandemic, financial collapse and yet she’s there beautiful and standing. Made me miss Lebanon so much. Raja’s relationship with his mom and his attempt to change her till the very end is endearing and familial. The author really likes the main character Raja. I also didn’t know that Rabih was born in Jordan. 2- Banana, Beaches, and bases by Cynthia Enloe. Rereading it’s because it’s an extremely important book for understanding how gender is intertwined with the political/economic/social. Always. Using it in my dissertation. 3- An interview with King Hussein published in a small book titled Our War With Israel. And the second book by an Egyptian Doctor Yusri Hashem who was volunteering with the Palestinian revolution in Jordan (1968-1970) and documents his experince including the 11 days before Nasser passed away. Also using them for dissertation. I listened to the last three books so I borrowed photos from other readers and tagged them. Thank you 💕 4- An American Marriage by Tayeri Jones (stay tuned) 5- I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacquline Harper. We meet a group of women who are in a prison, we don’t know why they where there and when they are free -we also don’t know how. They go into the world and find no one. Its a dystopia where women’s relationship and their insistent to survive takes center stage and where memory becomes a form of survival. It kept me anxious and waiting…and I am already anxious about my dissertation writing so it certainly didn’t help. 6- The Vegetarian by Han Kang. I wasn’t ready for this novel either. It’s set in Seoul and addresses human violence and agency, and ability (or lack of ) to make choices. My friend loved it and thought it was brilliant. I think my brain is over used with dissertation and I want novels that feel like a warm embrace. Please send me recommendations.

Seasons greetings! We’ve got NYRB titles galore for our indie publisher spotlight. We have a selection of some of our favorites, as well as customer favorites. Shout out to @booknerd37 for helping curate this batch, thank you so much! Here are some staff & friends’ blurbs of our picks if you need a place to start: * * * Julia on The Juniper Tree: Barbara Comyns’ novel combines her special blend of lower middle class realism, a troubling innocence, and unexpected fantasy. Using the framework of one of the darker Grimm’s fairy tales was perfect for her unique talent. * * * Joey on Free Day: I’ve spent the last five years recommending Free Day to anyone between the ages of 14 and 114. It’s a novel that takes place in one devastating and brutal day and it’s narrated by the righteously angry and darkly funny fourteen-year-old Galla. If we ever refresh ‘The Canon’ this is my vote for what should replace The Catcher in the Rye. * * * Ashleigh on BAMBI: This is the most beautiful wholesome fucked-up book I’ve ever read. Written straight to the heart. * * * Britt on The Door: Szabo writes about impossible, infuriating women so damn good. When I was done reading it, I felt like Viola, the dog, who despite being a beloved character, is roundly beaten and ends the novel partially despondent. * * Justin on Hard Rain Falling: One of my all time favorite NYRB Classics. A great grit lit read set in Portland follows two young men, one white, one black, both poor, who cannot escape what seems like a world rigged against them. It explores their deep relationship in prison, and the difficulty of building a life after release. An emotional, tender, philosophical read. @nyrbooks
