Five years ago, I began investigating a story for The Guardian. I had no idea where it would lead—or how much the people at the center of it would change my life.

Two Kansas City mothers, one Black and one white, lost their sons in separate police shootings fifteen miles apart. Both sons were innocent, unarmed, and shot in the back.

What began as a news story turned into years of research, interviews, and a deep investigation into obscure police records, testimony never heard, and footage never seen.

Along the way, I got to know Narene Stokes and Sheila Albers, who refused to let their sons' deaths be the end of the story. United by unimaginable loss, they became friends. Together, these women took on eerily similar police cover-ups and a justice system more interested in protecting its own than uncovering the truth.

The book, Stolen Sons, is their story. I just put it on the page.

Coming March 16, 2027, from Plainspoken Books at the University Press of Kansas.

Over the next few months, I'll share some of what went into writing this book, what I uncovered along the way, and why Ryan's and John's stories matter far beyond Kansas City.

Two mothers. Two innocent sons killed by police.

One unlikely friendship that gave Narene Crosby and Sheila Albers the strength to take on a justice system designed to protect its own.

My book, Stolen Sons, is their story. Coming March 2027 from Plainspoken Books, @kansas_press.

In 2013, Narene, a Black mother in Kansas City, lost her twenty-four-year-old son, Ryan Stokes, when a police officer shot and killed him over a false accusation. Five years later and fifteen miles away, police responding to a welfare check shot and killed Sheila’s seventeen-year-old son, John Albers, in Overland Park, Kansas.

Separated by race and circumstance, the two mothers discovered a shared truth: when police kill, the battle has only begun. Within hours of each shooting, two different police departments followed a similar script. They first blamed the victims. Then they blamed the mothers.

I told part of their story in The Guardian in August 2021. But I couldn’t let it go.

Over the last five years, I followed the police investigations and court cases, examined hard-to-find records, and interviewed witnesses, attorneys, journalists, judges, police and legal experts, and family members. I had to get beyond the headlines and behind the scenes of two devastating cases, from crime scenes and interrogation rooms to city halls, federal courtrooms, and the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Police violence told half the story. Narene and Sheila—and the friendship they forged through unimaginable loss—formed its heart. Their bond gave them the strength to keep fighting for their sons and, eventually, for other families like theirs.
