HOT WAX hits the racks in paperback one week from today 😎 If you like rock n roll, road trips, and wild rides, what are you waiting for?

"By the end of this feverishly-composed rock 'n' roll masterpiece, you'll be on your feet shouting for an encore.” — @laynefargo , bestselling author of The Favorites

The new novel from the bestselling author of If We Were Villains and Graveyard Shift—a vivid and immersive tale of one woman’s reckless mission to make sense of the events that shattered her childhood and made her who she is.

Summer, 1989: ten-year-old Suzanne is drawn like a magnet to her father’s forbidden world of electric guitars and tricked-out cars. When her mother remarries, she jumps at the chance to tag along on the concert tour that just might be Gil and the Kills’ wild ride to glory. But fame has sharper fangs than anybody realized, and as the band blazes up the charts, internal power struggles set Gil and his group on a collision course destined for a bloody reckoning—one shrouded in mystery and lore for decades to come.

The only witness to a desperate act of violence, Suzanne spends the next twenty-nine years trying to disappear. She trades the music and mayhem of her youth for the quiet of the suburbs and the company of her mild-mannered husband Rob. But when her father’s sudden death resurrects the troubled past she tried so hard to bury, she leaves it all behind and hits the road in search of answers. Hitching her fate and Gil’s beloved car to two vagabonds who call an old Airstream trailer home, she finds everything she thought she’d lost forever: desire, adventure, and the woman she once wanted to be. But Rob refuses to let her go. Determined to bring her back where she belongs, he chases her across the country—and drives her to a desperation all her own.

Drenched in knock-down drag-out rock and roll, Hot Wax is a raucous, breakneck ride to hell and back—where getting lost might be the only way to find yourself and save your soul.

Buy it wherever you buy books or come catch me on tour. Info at mlrio dot com 🎸

Before You Were Anne by Emiko Jean
Missing Girl • Police Procedural • Suspense
🥂 Happy Publication • 1 September 2026

Thank you @simonbooks + @simon.audio for the galley and ALC ♡ #simonbooksbuddy

The Return of Ellie Black took me by surprise as my top thriller of 2024. So I was very excited to get my hands on the follow up book.

Once again this is first a missing girl story. But it’s the historical timeline that was most compelling. Exploring Japanese tea houses, Yakuza, and crime syndicates…and escaping one’s destiny.

In the present timeline Chelsey is pregnant and desperate to learn her origin story: how did she come to be adopted into her white family? So many secrets and lies, in the name of love.

The 3 POVs and timeline hopping between Chelsey, Rika, and Naomi, made for a fast paced plot that I wanted to finish in a single sitting. (I didn’t because I was at my son’s soccer game and wanted to be present for that too 😝⚽️.)

If you loved Ellie Black you’re going to want to pick this one up. Out today!

TW: Child Abuse, Kidnapping, Domestic Violence, Rape, Assault, Misogyny

▶︎ •၊၊||၊|။||။‌‌‌‌‌|• 🎧 multi cast audio with Mizuo Peck, Mieko Gavia, and Mirai was the way to go, making it very easy to distinguish Chelsea, Rika, and Naomi.

Maybe you’ve seen me sitting around with my kindle. Well, this is what I’ve been reading! Thank you to the tagged publishers for my gifted copies!

What are you reading?

Better Than Revenge is a young adult fantasy and romance, all combined. The writing is sharp and makes commentary on how women can be treated in the media. The enemies to lovers was done really well and I was eager to see how Fitzgerald would handle the transition. There is So much toxicity, so much drama that I never felt settled but always was captivated.

Love You More by Emily Giffin was a fun read. I’ve been reading her books for years and they are always the perfect summer read. I loved how we were taken back in time and got to see Billie’s path. I don’t cry often but I cried with this book. This is the perfect blend of romance and other types of love.

Before You Were Anne by Emiko Jean is a story that packs a punch. Several times, I lost my breath. The turns this takes had me shocked. I was going to say shook but I’m 48 and it didn’t feel right. The ultimate betrayal takes place in this book and it’s what took this story to the next level. I had a visceral reaction to this piece of the story and can’t wait to hear what other people think. We also get to see more of Chelsey’s life and am ready for more books with her in them.

Our Marriage is Murder is a quick read, one that centers around a murder and a mystery. Between a castle and a feuding author couple, what is there to not enjoy?

If Books Could Kill was read while I was have a down time with my anxiety and the hours of peace this book afforded me was no joke. What an utterly perfect distraction this book was. I fell into this world and did not want to emerge. Roxie was a great character, reactive and layered. I went into this thinking it was fluff and it was anything but. I highly recommend this!!!

When twenty-three-year-old Eileen O’Malley meets charismatic naval officer Paul Archer in a Charleston department store, she doesn’t expect to fall so hard, so fast. But Paul is funny and ambitious, and soon, Eileen’s got a ring on her finger and is following him to the tiny, sun-drenched Mediterranean island of La Maddalena, where Paul will be heading up Radiological Controls aboard a submarine tender.

In La Maddalena, Eileen joins a makeshift community of navy wives who are hell-bent on making the island feel a little more like home. But for Eileen, whose brother died in Vietnam, home is a loaded word, and as she settles into life on the island—taking Italian lessons and learning to make culurgiones—she begins to love the place for all the ways it is not like where she comes from.

Still, it doesn’t take long for Eileen to be confronted with the complexities of being an American abroad. The decision to send nuclear-powered subs into the La Maddalena Archipelago was a contentious one, and the U.S. government is doing whatever it can to ensure that the island—not to mention all of Italy—doesn’t go communist in the next election.

When Italian activists and scientists begin to sound the alarm about possible nuclear contamination in the water, the island erupts in a series of protests, made worse by the ongoing mishaps of the U.S. Navy. Soon, Eileen’s marriage falters and her loyalties begin to shift as she is drawn into a web of secrets—and to a local journalist who forces her to imagine a life beyond the one she’s been handed.

Atmospheric, sexy, and quietly defiant, The Half Life is a story of love, complicity, and awakening—of one woman forced to choose between loyalty to her husband and country and to the Italian locals who show her the high cost of American exceptionalism. If you would like to purchase a copy of this immersive read, please give us a call at 817-489-5747, and we will be happy to assist you.
