Once Upon a Bookish Club 📚❤️ January pick!

Book: A Holly Jolly Ever After
Meeting spot: Decadent Macaron in Gilbert, AZ
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

First off, let me get one thing clear–I am a Kallum Lieberman fan. A tall, ex-boy band member with a beard and a bit of a dad bod, who is a fantastic cook and owns his own pizza restaurant? I’ll be first in line.

But overall, this book fell a little flat for me. The first book in the series, A Merry Little Meet Cute, was such a delight and had me laughing from start to finish. So I had high hopes for the second book in the series. I think it started off strong, the premise was fun and I fell in love with the characters right away. But the second half of the book was where it got frustrating. For someone to accuse another person of being too immature, but then be completely unwilling to have a single adult conversation about it?? Come on.

Of course, it all works out in the end because it’s a romance novel and that’s what they do. But Kallum deserves better and I’ll stand by it.

Once Upon a Bookish Club 📚❤️ November pick!

Book: The Deepest Roots by Miranda Asebedo
Meeting spot: Rigatonys in Tempe, AZ
What I ordered: Personal Pizza
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

This is one of those books that…wasn’t bad, but also wasn’t necessarily good? Overall the best way I can think to describe it is it just wasn’t very memorable. The writing itself was beautiful, and the characters (especially the side characters) were interesting; I also absolutely loved Asebedo’s other book, A Constellation of Roses. But the main conflict in The Deepest Roots seemed to kind of build up to nothing, making me feel a bit like reading it wasn’t really worth it.

Thanks @scott.roams for tagging me in the #meetmeinsongs challenge. I love music so enjoy these random favorites I picked. Some of the songs mean a lot to me. And I’m sorry the artist isn’t on all the pictures but feel free to ask me who an artist is or anything else.

#qotd who is your favorite artist?

Once Upon a Bookish Club 📚❤️ October pick!

Book: The Honeys by Ryan La Sala
Meeting spot: Postino in Tempe, AZ
What I ordered: Bruschetta Board
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was not only fun to read, but it was really fun to discuss! I definitely did not know where this book was going at any point; I was constantly going back and forth questioning what was real, or if there really was something supernatural happening. The author describes his work as “surrealism” and I think that’s the best way to put it. I enjoyed some of the camp nostalgia, as I was a summer camp kid all through middle and high school myself. All in all, this one was spooky and tense without being too scary for a wimp like me.

Once Upon a Bookish Club 📚❤️ September pick!

Book: Bring Me Your Midnight by Rachel Griffin
Meeting spot: Caramba Mexican Food in Scottsdale, AZ
What I ordered: Taco + Enchilada Combo Platter
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

After reading The Nature of Witches with our book club earlier this year, we were all really excited to read another book by Rachel Griffin. However, this one left a little something to be desired. The general consensus of the group was that the last quarter of the book was the most compelling, and we wished we had spent a lot less time on some of the earlier sections of the book. I struggled with Mortana’s character and understanding her motivations and decision-making. But let me tell you who I absolutely LOVED - Wolfe’s character was so great and gave me all the feels. I did enjoy the magic system in this book and the differences between the high and low magic.

I heard lots of good things about Rachel’s other book, Wild is the Witch, from my fellow book clubbers, so I’ll have to check that one out next!

Bring Me Your Midnight by @timesnewrachel was the book I picked for #onceuponabookishbookclub and we don’t meet to discuss it for a couple of more weeks but, I can’t wait that long.

This book absolutely broke my heart and yet put it back together. It was magical, sad, hopeful, beautiful…

I don’t know what the rest of book club thought but this was absolutely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me. 🌕🌊

Once Upon a Bookish Club 📚❤️ August pick!

Book: Cassandra in Reverse by Holly Smale
Meeting spot: SanTan Brewing Company in Chandler, AZ
What I ordered: Southwest Biscuits and Gravy
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was such a fun and unique take on a time travel story. Our group both really enjoyed, and were totally driven crazy by this one. I for one got so stressed out with all the awkward situations Cassandra kept putting herself in trying over and over to make everything go totally perfectly. But I also think it’s a sign of a great writer when they can really make every cringe-worthy moment feel so real. We had mixed feelings about the ending, but overall is was a great read.
