It’s me, Seaman Rolly, with my Penguin 🐧150th anniversary edition of Moby Dick 🐋 … and my favorite white whale bowl I got in Iceland 🇮🇸 several years ago. It’s one of my most treasured and useful souvenirs ever! And it’s made of melamine so has the most silky-smooth feel to it 🤍

Next is a closeup of the book; the pages; and the middle schoolers’ edition of Moby Dick I read a couple of years ago 🤫

Now for the big question:
❓How much do you think I paid for this 150th anniversary edition of Moby Dick I got at the thrift store❓

❓Have you read Moby Dick❓🐋

It’s me, Coast Guard Officer Rolly ⚓️ on the high seas 🌊 looking for my lost Naval comrade, British Lieut. Christopher Martin aka “Pincher Martin” who just so happens to have a book named after him (written by William Golding, of “Lord of the Flies” fame.)

Here’s my buddy’s story:
After Martin’s destroyer is torpedoed in the middle of the Atlantic (WWII), he finds himself floundering around desperately in the inky black sea, calling out for help until he washes up on a desolate rock-type 🪨 island.

Once he gets his bearings, he begins applying survival strategies regarding how to catch rainwater, how to construct an 🆘 sign from seaweed, and how to build a distress figure from rocks. He even uses a bit of an aluminum foil candy wrapper he finds in his pocket to try to reflect the sun and hopefully attract a passing ship.

He optimistically declares every day that he’ll be rescued 🛟 and does his best to sidestep the slippery slope to insanity that one might imagine is likely in a situation like this (think Tom Hanks in “Cast Away”). Unlike Tom Hanks’ character who may have had to pull out his own tooth, however, Martin had to give himself an enema using his rubber life preserver and sea water so there’s that 😳

As you can probably imagine, Martin eventually starts hallucinating, suffers from exposure, and is dreadfully malnourished. He begins recalling scenes from his past life, some in particular involving his mate Nathaniel and a woman he desired (Sybil, Nat’s fiancée) that reveal a bad side to Martin, and made me start wondering if he deserved to be rescued in the first place.

Then, phew 😮‍💨 the story continues in a very existential manner, in a realm between sanity and insanity, redemption and damnation. I really enjoyed this unusual novel 👍

No wonder Golding was a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature🏅- something I just learned 🤷‍♀️

❓Have you read anything by William Golding❓

It’s me, worldly Rolly, with my entries for the #SixBooksSixCountries 🌎🌏🌍 challenge:

🇺🇸 USA. Summer Crossing 🚢 by #TrumanCapote. You know there’s no way I’m doing a challenge without including a Capote if I can help it 😂 I just love the backstory of this manuscript, once thought lost, that showed up years after Capote’s death. DM me if you wanna hear the whole story 🗣

🇮🇪 Ireland. Dubliners 🍀 by #JamesJoyce. The first Joyce I read black in HS. Two of my favorite stories ever are in this amazing collection: “Araby” and “The Dead” 🪦

🇧🇷 Brazil. The Witch of Portobello 🧙by #PauloCoelho. This has been on my TBR shelf for over a year. The sticky note I put inside the cover says that I got it in June 2021 at the thrift store for a whopping 25¢ 👍 I’ve read one Coelho so far. This will be my second.

🇩🇰 Denmark. A Change of Time ⏳ by #IdaJessen. Such a tender and glorious story. I’m so glad my buddy @favntag introduced me to this author and gifted me this lovely little book.

🇩🇪 Germany. The Pigeon 🐦 by #PatrickSüskind. From the opening sentence, I knew I was going to love this book: “At the time the pigeon affair overtook him, unhinging his life from one day to the next, Jonathan Noel, already passed 50, could look back over a good 20 year period of total uneventfulness and would never have expected anything of importance could ever overtake him again – other than death someday.” 🖤

🇬🇧 UK. Animal Farm 🐷 by #GeorgeOrwell. Brilliant and scary satire. A must-read.

Thanks so much to my buddy @booksafterten for the 🏷 Play along if you’d like. This was fun‼️

It’s me, Rolly, with my I ❤️ NY tie on, having another go at #TotebagTuesday 🛍

Today it was easy to find pairings for my New York🗽tote bag. First up is Capote’s “Brooklyn: a Personal Memoir” which originally came out in 1959 and was republished along with photos by David Attie in 2015.

And next … swipe ⬅️
Our #CapoteDevotee reading group is reading Capote’s “The Dogs Bark” in September — well look what’s here: a different essay on Brooklyn, this one from 1946 along with one entitled “New York”🍎 Capote just loved New York❣️

❓Do you have any books set in or about New York❓

Also, if you’d like to join our Capote group, we’d love to have you❣️DM Rolly 🐶

And thanks again to @sillyslicker_books for this wonderful book and to @susieqpasq for my snazzy tie 😘😘
