Founded by James Holden in 2003, Border Community became one of electronic music’s most distinctive labels, blurring the lines between progressive house, techno, electronica and psychedelia. Defined by experimentation, intricate arrangements and emotive soundscapes, the label developed a singular identity, bringing together unconventional productions that challenged genre conventions while retaining a strong connection to the dancefloor. We look back at some of the label’s essential tracks, highlighting the distinctive sound, creative vision and lasting influence that have made its catalogue such an important part of electronic music. 1. Where @bordercommunityrecordings started. @james__holden opened his own label with A Break In The Clouds in 2003, before Outhouse, The Sky Was Pink, Soopertrack and all the other classics that followed. This one pretty much laid out the blueprint straight away: strange rhythms, huge bass, beautiful melody and loads of little details constantly shifting around. It really never gets old. Nearly ten minutes long, but it still feels like a complete little journey every time. I’m playing the 2005 repress here, with the plain sleeve rather than the original full-colour artwork. #jamesholden #bordercommunity #progressivehouse #techno #recordcollection
