At work during their residency! Finn Idris (violin) and Alex Raineri (keyboard)

Alex and Finn spent a brief but super productive residency at Harrigans Lane, developing their Helcarax album project. Three days of stunning spring weather to inspire them!

Drawing on their shared history as childhood chamber ensemble musicians, Alex and Finn have reconnected through a shared curiosity for the possibilities between performer and composer. Their work weaves immersive live electronics through original compositions, creating a rich tapestry of sound shaped by diverse sources of inspiration. Forest walks, long talks, lots of playing, lots of listening. This is going to be a great album!

Helcarax builds on work first developed during their 2025 Mount Wilson Artist Residency in the Blue Mountains, bringing together the disparate dimensions of their varied creative careers in collaborative composition.

Joining them for documentation was Greg Harm from Tangible Media.

Finn Idris is a Melbourne-based composer, violinist, electronic producer, and multi-instrumentalist whose work spans experimental IDM, electro-acoustic composition, and immersive audiovisual performance.

We enjoyed their company as well as their music and hope to see them back one day to share the music with our keen Lagavulin audience!

Keeping the momentum hot, our next facilitators are Finn Idris & Harold, two of this city’s most forward-thinking sonic explorers.

Finn Idris is an Australian composer, instrumentalist, and researcher working at the intersection of contemporary classical performance, experimental electronic music, and surveillance-driven audiovisual systems. Trained at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (MMus, High Distinction), they have over a decade of professional experience spanning chamber orchestras, film and game scoring, sound design, mastering, and large-scale installation work across Australia and Europe. Their practice integrates electric violin and viola, live resynthesis, generative systems, and audience-responsive technologies, with recent performances and releases in IDM, ambient, and experimental contexts through international labels including Janushoved (DK), Steeplejack (AU), and French and Dutch imprints.

Submissions are now open for Playback’s August event - closing Sunday 16 August. Playback prioritises tracks submitted by women, trans, queer, First Peoples, POC, and folks with a disability.

TONIC002: Insula x Niph (au) Te-Ika-a-Māui tour STARTS TODAY! Can’t wait to begin at @snails.artistrunspaces

The accompanying visuals for the tour are created by a recent live collaborator of Insula’s, Niph @niph.ophila. We are sad they cannot join us live, but you can still experience their visuals throughout the tour.

Niph is naarm based new-media artist, primarily exploring the use of data reactive simulation as a complimentary analogue of expression, where distinctions between sound, light and form are disregarded. The resulting compositions reflect not only musical qualities, but heavily tap into the emotional effects of performance and creation.

Next Thursday night (Easter Friday the next day) we can’t wait to bring the show up to Whanganui at @porridge_watson for a night of live electronics and local DJ favourites Ludus + Rizzo to finish the evening.

TONIC002: Insula x Niph (AU) | Body Beat Ritual @bodybeatritual | RIZZO @alicerizzoofficial | Ludus @ludus.etc

Insula operates at the intersection of brutal electronics, live violin, and real-time audiovisual systems. Built from resynthesis, distortion, and physical performance, the project treats the body as both instrument and controller. Recent shows expand into live collaboration with visual artist Niph, forming immersive environments where sound and image evolve together in tightly coupled feedback.

UK raised, New Zealand based Body Beat Ritual creates a stripped back soundworld of reverential body rhythms, pummelling hardware drums and hypnotic, politicised vocal samples.

Within Aotearoa’s electronic community, Ludus has carved a distinct path through her ever-evolving practice as an avid sound designer and producer. With a knack for merging unexpected textures and rhythms, her production and DJing explores the range between ambient stillness and club intensity, where broken percussion and high frequency textures converge.

Porridge is going to stay open a bit later for us tonight so DJs and Tonic co-founders Ludus and RIZZO are going to jump in for a little night cap! We will have to see what sort of chaser is in order after Insula - whether that be a light tipple or a few more swigs of the hard stuff.
