You get as much freedom as you’re willing to be disciplined 🔥 it’s an equal and reciprocal exchange!

Gotta speak the language, and it doesn’t involve positive affirmations or cookies!

If you are still struggling to communicate with your dog, try

➡️ using far less words (notice how these two didn’t say a word to each other 😉)

➡️ using training tools that help mimic your dog’s first language (like a prong collar and/or e-collar)

➡️ ignore the hype and keep it boring - it’s not meant to be so complicated!

🫸🏼 STOP letting your puppy say hello to everyone they meet (if you want them to be social).

😳 Here is a real life, real time example of how allowing a puppy to say hello to everyone actually creates a ton of social excitement (anxiety), and makes them far less capable in social settings. This eventually leads to reactivity in many cases, but at best it just creates a rude dog who drags its owner all over the place and invades other people’s space uninvited.

✨ You can see how not allowing our training puppy to say hello, actually creates a more calm, capable, social dog.

✅ Tell people “no thanks” to physical greetings and do not stop to chat about it.
✅ Hold your dog accountable to the heel position and a neutral mindset and do not negotiate with them.

🤔 Which dog in the video do you think is more social?

Back to basics 🌅

An enriched life is one free of chronic stress, and full of persistent peace.

🎢 Free of the quick ride and crash on the dopamine-adrenaline-cortisol rollercoaster caused by constant excitement and stimulus (food puzzles, dog parks, baby talk, constant affection)

😌 Full of the lasting joyful effect of serotonin caused by the calm embrace of a quiet, predictable environment (porch hangs, slow walks, fewer words, calming touch)

🌿 Nature intended animals to be in a state of rest most of the time, and a state of excitement only when life depended on immediate action.

📚 We learned this in school, but forgot to apply it to everyday life, for ourselves and our pets.

✨ It’s never too late to go back.

🐕‍🦺 Service dogs do well in public because they have a neutral association to people, dogs, and basically every other variable that may come their way.

That neutral state is achieved by:
1️⃣ Holding the dog accountable to staying on task, and
2️⃣ Protecting the dog’s personal space by not allowing anyone to engage with them and vice versa

It is not achieved by
🤪 Squealing affirmations to your dog while they feast their senses on their trigger
🍪 Rapid firing cookies to your dog’s face while squealing while they load up on adrenaline from every angle

🧑‍🏫 This is a skill pretty much any pet dog can and should learn. It’s not something special that only service dogs can grasp.

🚀 The specialty skills beyond this basic impulse control are the things service animals are selectively bred and trained for. But we don’t need those skills in the average pet home. We just need Buddy to be cool on his morning walks.

✋ Tell your neighbour no to greeting your dog on leash, in their first language.

🥱 It’s truly that simple.

Many people defend their dog’s reactivity/anxiety/aggression like it’s a precious part of their personality that they don’t want to let go of 👀

We could solve it or greatly improve things in a matter of days or weeks, but many people would prefer to be perpetually validated in their struggle, than to be free of their challenges.

At some point, their dog’s behaviour issues stop being a problem and start being a choice.

Because addressing it would require dog owners to examine their habits, their training, their lifestyle, their priorities…

And most people would prefer the sympathy and familiarity of where they’re stuck than the discomfort of growing beyond their self imposed limits.

But that’s not you.

And you’re who we’re here for.

We had a private session with Honey and her people today and here’s the result…

Honeys owners were struggling with her pulling on leash, so much so that walks were becoming dangerous and their only option was to drive her to the dog park to get her exercise — which was leading to bigger problems (hello resource guarding 🫣)

They can’t let her off leash because she will run away and walks on leash were stressful and downright dangerous! We introduced Honey to the prong and ecollar indoors first and then took our new communication outside, the results speak for themselves.

Her owner couldn’t believe she could enjoy a walk without any pulling! 😆

A social dog is one who can enjoy downtime with others more often than playtime. 🥱

An anti-social dog is one who treats every interaction with dogs or people, strangers or friends, like it’s a 1990’s mosh pit. 🫨

Agree or disagree? ⬇️

Society says that being structured and disciplined is an extreme way to live with a dog - but feeling embarrassed, hopeless, and constantly stressed about what they might do next is totally normal. 🤔

In a world that’s addicted to unnecessary chaos and drama - be boring! 🥱

Our dogs are suffering because as a culture we refuse to respect their inherent nature and the needs they have as the species they are. 😩

The level of confusion and fear they experience being fully dependant on a caregiver who willfully misunderstands and mistreats them solely for their own satisfaction, is unimaginable and inexcusable. 🫣

The burden to tidy up the resulting psychological mess both in dogs and their owners, lands on trainers who are vilified for telling the truth and upsetting the culture and the marketplace that profits from selling blatant lies to emotionally vulnerable customers. 👿

What you can do today, is stop participating. Get back to basics, follow nature’s perfect laws, and enjoy the peace that naturally follows. 🧘‍♀️
