From orangutan encounters to cruising the Kinabatangan River, our time at Sukau Rainforest Lodge was awesome. We traded the road for the river and were greeted by proboscis monkeys, macaques, a stunning blue-eared kingfisher, saltwater crocs and orangutans.

The adventure continued with a visit to the Gomantong Caves (separate post) and an unsuccessful 4-hour search for elephants that ended with a spectacular consolation prize, eight Rhinoceros Hornbills gliding into the trees.

We hoped to see orang-utans one day... and at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo, we did. 🧡 Since 1964 it has cared for orphaned orangutans and helped them return to the forest. Watching them swing through the trees with the kids was unforgettable 🥹

Same forest, different temper

Macaca fascicularis, Macaca nemestrina — Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Borneo — April 2026

Evening on the Kinabatangan, out of Sukau Lodge, the boat running slowly along the bank while the light dropped from amber to almost nothing under the canopy. Much of the forest left along this river is a narrow strip, so the wildlife ends up concentrated at the water’s edge, and a cruise at this hour is mostly a matter of drifting past it.

Frame 1 is a juvenile long-tailed macaque on a fallen branch at the waterline, tail trailing behind him, watching the boat with a level, slightly wary stare. Long-tails were moved to Endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2022.

Frame 2 is a southern pig-tailed macaque at the edge of the understory, mouth wide open, canines showing. Pig-tails are the heavier of the two and listed as Vulnerable. They spend far more time on the forest floor than long-tails do, which is exactly where this one was.

POV: you swap the resort for a rainforest adventure 🌿🐒

We spent a few unforgettable days at Utan Rainforest Lodge in Sabah, Borneo, waking up to the sounds of the jungle and getting the girls up close to one of the most incredible natural environments in the world.

Forget kids’ clubs… give us orangutans, wild jungles and a little adventure. ❤️🌏

We’ve wanted to travel to Borneo for years, hoping to see orangutans in the wild. After a quirky rainforest lodge, a slightly underwhelming first visit to Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary and some rather beautiful but sinister pit vipers, we were beginning to wonder if the jungle was keeping its secrets.

However we decided to revisit an area on our second morning … suddenly orangutans were swinging effortlessly through the treetops, with tiny babies clinging on for dear life.

Wild, unpredictable and utterly spectacular — exactly what we’d hoped for. Throw in magnificent rhinoceros hornbills, lush rainforest and a few macaques, and it was all worth the wait.

Next stop, a boat journey into the rainforest and Sukau Rainforest Lodge.

When you think of safari, you automatically think of Africa, right? 🌍

But what if I told you there was somewhere else… somewhere home to wild orangutans, Bornean pygmy elephants, quirky proboscis monkeys and magnificent rhinoceros hornbills — wildlife you won’t find anywhere else on Earth. 🦧🐘🌿

We were lucky enough to experience exactly that in Borneo, Malaysia. 🇲🇾
Staying at Utan Rainforest Lodge, we spent our days exploring on foot, by safari vehicle and along the river, guided by incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming locals.

Every experience brought us deeper into the rainforest and closer to its extraordinary wildlife, it truly felt like stepping into another world.

If an unforgettable rainforest safari is on your bucket list, take this as your sign to look beyond Africa. ❤️🌏

Save this for your future travels!

It’s a pleasure to receive this postcard from Malaysia 🇲🇾. Reminds me of the time 🕰️ (80’s) when my dad used to follow and observe the hornbills at the national park.

The one everyone skips

Macaca fascicularis — Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Borneo — April 2026

The eyes, mostly — amber, close, and entirely unbothered by the boat a few metres off the bank.

Long-tailed macaques are the most common primate on the Kinabatangan, which is exactly why nobody photographs them: you come for orangutans and proboscis monkeys and learn to look straight past the macaques lining the banks. But they’re bold around boats in a way the rarer primates never are, and that’s the whole reason this frame exists — a wild animal holding your eye at arm’s length, deciding you aren’t worth moving for.

Also called the crab-eating macaque. It earns the name at the water’s edge.

#longtailedmacaque #kinabatangan #sabah #borneowildlife #wildlifephotography A long-tailed macaque sits on a riverbank branch facing the camera, amber eyes direct, grey-brown fur and pale chest. Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Borneo. Soft green rainforest bokeh, low light.
