Historical fiction done right. Intimate yet epic, heartbreaking yet hopeful, The Women gives a voice to the women whose contributions to the Vietnam War have so often been overlooked or forgotten.

It’s 1965, and when her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, Frances “Frankie” McGrath makes the life-changing decision to join the Army Nurse Corps. What follows is an extraordinary journey through the atrocities of war, the fragility of humanity, and the relentless complexities of misogyny in a world that refuses to acknowledge the sacrifices of women.

Hannah does not shy away from the horrors of war. Death, hope, friendship, betrayal, and the sheer brutality of human suffering are woven together in a story that is as emotionally devastating as it is compelling. But what struck me most was that the battle doesn’t end when the Americans return home from Vietnam. For Frankie, and so many women like her, a different kind of war is only just beginning. The struggle to return to some semblance of normality, the psychological scars of service, and the indignity of having their experiences dismissed or erased are just as confronting as the war itself.

This is what I love about historical fiction when it’s done well. It takes enormous historical events and makes them deeply personal, reminding us that behind the dates, statistics, and political decisions are real people whose lives were irrevocably changed. And importantly, it challenges whose stories we have traditionally chosen to remember.

A tough but necessary read. Beautifully written, emotionally exhausting, and a powerful reminder that women were there too.
