BEYOND THE BEDSIDE | PART 1

When people think about nursing, they usually picture hospitals, clinics, and bedside care. But nursing is SO much bigger than that! There are nurses building careers in spaces you probably never even considered, and some of these opportunities might surprise you.

For Part 1 of Beyond the Bedside, we're spotlighting five Black nurses who are doing just that. These are real nurses, working in real specialties, sharing how they found their way into careers outside of traditional bedside nursing. And the best part is we're hearing directly from the nurses themselves.

👉🏾 Swipe through to discover five nursing careers you might not know exist.

Which one interests you the most??

ECMO PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Meet Tahnee Johnson, MSN-Ed, RN, CCRN! 💛
@stayqueening

With a background in cardiovascular intensive care, Tahnee developed a passion for caring for critically ill patients. Her interest in ECMO grew from seeing how this advanced form of life support could give patients a bridge to recovery when their hearts or lungs needed additional support.

That passion eventually led her into ECMO program coordination, where her work extends beyond direct patient care to include education, teamwork, and building a program that supports both patients and the healthcare professionals caring for them.

When we asked Tahnee what she enjoys most about ECMO, her answer said it all:

💬 “My favorite part of ECMO is being part of something that gives patients another chance at life.”

And that's what makes this specialty so meaningful. Behind the machines, protocols, and critical decisions are patients and families hoping for another chance.

Thank you, Tahnee, for sharing your journey with the BNKI community! 🖤

29. 🤍✨

Chapter 29… and honestly, I’m walking into this year with a completely different kind of gratitude.

I’m grateful for the woman I’ve become, but even more grateful for everything it took to become her. The lessons, the uncomfortable seasons, the closed doors, the unexpected blessings, the moments I had to choose myself, and the times I had to trust God even when I couldn’t see what was next.

At 29, I’m realizing that growth isn’t always loud. Sometimes growth looks like protecting your peace. Setting boundaries. Outgrowing certain environments. Becoming more intentional with your time. Choosing yourself without feeling guilty. Celebrating how far you’ve come instead of constantly focusing on how far you still have to go.

This year, I’m not chasing what isn’t meant for me. I’m not forcing connections, opportunities, friendships, relationships, or timelines. What’s for me will meet me where I am. What leaves, leaves. What stays, stays. And what’s coming? I trust it will be better than anything I could have planned for myself. 🤍

29 feels like stepping into my softest, strongest, happiest, most intentional era yet. ✨

I’m praying for a year filled with genuine happiness, overflowing blessings, financial growth, new opportunities, unforgettable memories, good health, love, peace, answered prayers, and the courage to keep becoming the woman I’m meant to be.

I’m proud of the woman, mother, nurse, creator, friend, daughter, and person I am today. And I’m even more excited about who I’m becoming.

Here’s to 29 — more life, more love, more laughter, more purpose, more experiences, more money, more travel, more content, more confidence, and A LOT more choosing me. 🥂✨

29, please be good to me. 🤎

Happy Birthday to me. ♍️✨

What I do in a week as a full-time nurse, full-time content creator, and full-time mom 💕

Somehow, between night shifts, school drop-offs, brand emails, content planning, workouts, grocery runs, laundry, and trying to remember to drink enough water, the week always gets done.

This week looked like:
✨ Caring for patients during long nursing shifts
✨ Creating content, filming, editing, and posting
✨ Attending events and exploring my city
✨ Pilates and movement for my mental health
✨ Mom duties, homework help, meals, and bedtime routines
✨ Answering emails and working on upcoming collaborations
✨ Cleaning, meal prepping, and resetting the house
✨ Finding small moments for myself in between it all

Being a working mom means wearing a lot of hats. Some days feel perfectly balanced, and other days feel like pure survival mode. But one thing I’ve learned is that you don’t have to do everything perfectly to be doing a great job.

To every mom building a career, chasing goals, raising kids, and still finding time to dream bigger—you are doing more than you realize. 🤍

This is your reminder that progress doesn’t always look glamorous. Sometimes it looks like showing up tired, doing your best, and doing it all again tomorrow.

A day in the life lately looks like balancing motherhood, Pilates, content creation, healing, growth, and 12-hour night shifts all at once 🤍🩺

One minute I’m making breakfast, packing bags, answering emails, filming content, or trying to squeeze in Pilates… and the next I’m clocking in overnight taking care of patients while the rest of the city sleeps. Then somehow still waking up the next morning to do it all over again for my baby.

Being a single mom has taught me so much about strength, discipline, sacrifice, and showing up even when you’re exhausted. There’s no “off” switch. But I’ve also learned how important it is to pour back into myself too. Pilates, movement, wellness, and quiet moments to myself have honestly become therapy for me in this season of life.

Some days are messy. Some days feel overwhelming. Some days I question if I’m doing enough. But then I look around at the life I’m building and realize younger me would be so proud 🥹

Just a girl out here trying to create a soft life while still working hard for it. A nurse. A mother. A creator. A woman still choosing herself too ✨
