What if the quick Botox touch-up you get before vacation could leave you struggling to see, swallow—or even move normally? It sounds terrifying, but it actually happened to a 45-year-old California woman who simply wanted a Botox glow-up before a trip. She later developed blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, extreme fatigue, and muscle weakness—and ended up hospitalized for seven days from a neuromodulator injection.

Botox and other neuromodulator injections are incredibly popular. In 2025, nearly 10 million neuromodulator treatments were performed in the U.S., making them the dominant minimally invasive cosmetic procedure. The FDA-approved Botox label carries a boxed warning—the FDA's strongest safety warning—because the effects of the toxin can, in rare cases, spread beyond where it was injected. Symptoms can include generalized muscle weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and breathing problems. In severe cases, those breathing and swallowing complications can be life-threatening.

In this episode, we go beyond the beauty trend to talk about what Botox and other neurotoxins actually do, the potential risks and side effects, and the questions you should ask before putting a neurotoxin into your body.

In January I received cosmetic wrinkle relaxers from a licensed NP. I wish I had known how it would change my life.

I woke up the next morning in blinding pain, too sick to move, let alone take my kids to school. After consulting with the company that did the injections, I went to the ER.

So many trips to the ER, tests, so many drugs, and procedures trying to figure out what was wrong. So many days I couldn't get out of bed. So many days I could barely function.

I went in for some invasive testing of my brain. Was I terrified? No, just worried that they won't find anything they can fix.

10 months of a constant throbbing headache and there is no relief. While I'm glad there's nothing "wrong" it's physically and mentally killing me to live with this chronic pain.

I'm learning to live a new life. Less outings, less physical adventure, trying to remember I can't bend over to pull weeds without pain. Remembering to not overdo it or I will pay for it for days.

One day at a time....
