Fire challenge at Wild Camp 2026, right before the storms rolled in.

The rules: everything had to come off the property. Ferro rod only. First to bring 16 oz of water to a rolling boil wins.

@hoboforge_survival took it. Jason spent years as a high-risk SERE instructor, so this one was home turf.

What won it wasn’t the striking. It was the prep. He had a big pile of tinder and kindling ready before he ever threw a spark. Most fires fail long before the ferro rod comes out.

The best part came after he won. Jason went straight over to help several of the younger competitors get back in it and finish the objective.

That’s the whole point. Skills are worth more when you pass them on.

Thanks to @rewyldoutdoors for putting it on.

This is my vehicle water setup: a Scepter 20L jerry can, made for drinking water, a jug of plain household bleach, and two ways to measure it. When the tap stops being an option, this is how a can of questionable water becomes a can of drinkable water in larger quantities.

A while back we covered why plain bleach beats Betadine for emergency water. This post is the how-to.

The dose depends on your bottle. Read the label for sodium hypochlorite. Household bleach runs 5 to 9%. This jug is 7.55%.

Clear water:
→ 1 quart or liter: 2 drops
→ 1 gallon: 6 to 8 drops, depending on strength
→ Full 20L jerry can, 7.55% bleach: 1.7 mL
→ Cloudy, colored or very cold water: double it

Stir, cap it, wait 30 minutes. It should smell faintly of chlorine. No smell? Repeat the dose and wait another 15.

Why a syringe AND a measuring cup? Because the batch size picks the tool. The cup’s smallest mark is 10 mL, which is right for a 55-gallon drum (about 18 mL) and way too much for a jerry can. A full 20L can takes less than half a teaspoon, so that dose goes in the 3 mL oral syringe. A splash from the cap is a guess, not a measurement. The syringe costs about a dollar at any pharmacy. Keep one with the bleach.

💬 Comment “BLEACH” and I’ll DM you the one-page field guide: the dosing table for 6%, 7.55% and 8.25% bleach, the process step by step, how to sanitize and store your containers, and the limits you need to know.

The bottle rules, and what bleach won’t do, are in the pinned comment below. ⬇️

This sheath went out for a big ass @halffaceblades Bowie! The kydex is Mossy Oak Bottomland on the front and orange on the back. It’s set up with a @estelawilded @exotac ferro rod, Tek Lok mount and orange finish washers. Rambo would be proud!
