This chilly Monday feels like a good day to discuss one of our R&D programs for 2025 - the 500E.

Porsche built 1,528 of these W124 Mercedes 500E sedans for the United States in the early 90s. Legendary M119 5.0L V8, 326hp & 354 ft/lb, top speed limited to 160mph, and wide front fender flares.

We had always heard of the 500E, but only recently got our first taste of the car. This unit arrived stock with higher miles, but overall clean and well-serviced. So it was a pretty honest first impression.

Super smooth and fast, happier at 95mph than 55mph. Great cruiser and looks good doing it. Although after a miles it felt like this unit could use some “love.” We put together an initial list to address on the platform - suspension, wheels, exhaust, etc. Basically we need it to drive better, look better, and sound better.

We have already sorted a few items i.e. full exhaust from @flieben_ca (scroll for a video), fresh OEM parts from @searsimports & @boxyauto, a refinished set of AMG Monoblocks mounted on N-spec Michelin PS2s, and a sneaky head unit upgrade via the new Porsche Classic PCCM unit for air-cooled 911s.

More on those items another time, today we discuss the 500E chassis with our partners at @motioncontrolsuspension. The W124 platform is missing a modern damper solution that is built for the specific demands of the 500E. For this, along with desire to have complete control over ride height & corner balance, we set out to develop this Made in America 🇺🇸 damper setup with MCS.

It’s early days, but we have a prototype set of MCS 3ways on hand and have completed the initial fitment phase. They fit ✔️A good first step but a few adjustments are in order before we have a complete 500E-specific solution. From there, and as weather allows, we begin testing 🏴‍☠️

Do we have any 500E owners on here? We’d love to hear from you and some idea(s) you may have.

P.S. For the real W124 heads, you’ll notice we test fit a non-divorced spring setup up front. It was good information to know a coilover will fit. A potential option for production with more testing, but the initial setup will be a divorced setup as is the norm for the platform.
