Somehow in the midst of one of the hardest years of my life, there was so, so much joy. I will remember 2025 for so many different reasons, but I would be remiss if I didn’t call specific attention to the way God surprised me in the midst of my pain with the kind of joy it felt like my soul could hardly contain. Like my niece in this picture, arms outstretched, popping bubbles of happiness to rain lightness upon so many heavy days.

I have so many things that I made in 2025 that I still want to find ways to share. But as I turn the calendar page, I mostly wanted to share all of these in between moments that shined God-given light on dark days.

I’m the youngest four siblings. So as a kid, I never got the chance to watch my family grow. But when I married @ericapthomason, all of a sudden my family doubled overnight. Then slowly siblings add spouses, have nieces and nephews. Growing older has meant seeing the aggressive expansion of what the idea of family means to me. My heart continues to expand further and further to welcome all these people into my life.

In the last two weeks I’ve spent time in two of my favorite places with members of both sides of my family. Both families are distinct in culture and personality, but somehow now I am a product of both of them. Every one of these people in some way shapes who I am, and I really like who I am. I guess that means I really like my family too.

In 2024, I saw the Northern Lights at home, but not in Norway. It sounds strange, but this dynamic has been the theme of this year for me.

Erica and I went to the Arctic Circle in February. We created the perfect environment for joy, and it didn’t happen like we planned it. But then I saw the Northern Lights in her parents backyard in May. Joy still came and found me in surprising ways.

I would be lying if I didn’t say that 2024 was a hard year for me. Things I thought were surefire pathways to the peaks of joy ended up sliding me into valleys of sorrow. But all has not been lost. I have not been abandoned, left alone. The fickle, dancing lights of joy have dramatically appeared amidst the dark backgrounds of my disappointments.

And pictured here is joy.

Maybe someday I’ll see the Northern Lights in their true glory, shining with full brightness and color, riding on the winds of an arctic night. Or maybe I’ll just step outside my door and they’ll be there, hiding in plain sight.

(The cover picture was painted by the ridiculously talented Piper Lee, who gifted Erica and I that painting this year)
