GrowthTech Summit in Las Colinas did not disappoint. 🧠✨
Got to sit in rooms with sharp, driven business minds and walk away with real, actionable advice — plus a great refresher on everything I picked up as a #GoldmanSachs #OMBW program graduate. That program changed how I think about scaling a business, and days like today remind me why I keep showing up to learn, even 18 years into this industry.

Grateful for every conversation, every connection, and every lesson that keeps sharpening how I run Black Unicorn Merchandising. 🦄

Thank you to this incredible community of founders and business owners — wishing you all continued growth and success in your businesses. 💛

Melissa Bradley, Founder of New Majority Ventures, opened DC Startup & Tech Week with practical guidance for founders: know your strengths, build a team that fills your gaps, understand your customers, and make sure your numbers support your pitch. Her challenge for the week?

Develop one consistent story, find five people to approach for feedback, and secure at least one investor meeting. In her afternoon session, Melissa brought that same clarity to artificial intelligence: “AI saves time only when there is a system for it to run.”

Behind some of the software businesses we use every day are founders who looked at a complicated problem and thought: there has to be a better way to do this.

The Black women SaaS founders featured in The First 200 Index have built technology tackling everything from workplace equity and software development to nonprofit management, HR, and tools for small businesses. And they’ve raised millions in venture capital.

What we love about this group is the reminder that some of the biggest startup opportunities aren’t always the flashiest. Sometimes they come from making an existing process faster, easier, smarter, or simply better for the people using it.

That’s the beauty of SaaS: find a problem worth solving, build the technology to solve it, and create something people can keep coming back to.

Melissa Bradley, Founder of New Majority Ventures, challenged founders to know their businesses inside and out during her opening keynote at DC Startup & Tech Week (#DCSTW26).

In “Investor Ready: Build the Business Investors Say Yes To,” she reminded us: “The numbers are the validator of your story.” 📊

→ Know your numbers and make sure they support your pitch and funding request.
→ Make a clear ask so investors know what you need and how they can act.

What’s one thing you’re strengthening before your next investor conversation?
There’s more ahead this week! Explore the full schedule at the link in bio.

Last stop: Detroit. The New Majority Summit closed its tour at the Garden Theater yesterday, on Sweetest Day. Three things to sit with.

First, the name. The New Majority is Melissa Bradley's name for the founders this country has underestimated: women, people of color, LGBTQIA+ founders. The name is math. People of color are on track to be the majority of this country by mid-century, and Black women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in America. Still, in 2025, startups with a Black founder got 0.32 percent of U.S. venture funding. The talent was never the gap. Access is. Resource and educate these founders and they hire from their own blocks and reinvest in their own communities.

Second, the day. Sweetest Day was born in this part of the country, a day made to show forgotten people that somebody cared. Entrepreneurship is a forced personal growth journey. Nobody signs up for the version of yourself you have to become to make payroll. So a theater full of founders spending Sweetest Day together, trading stories and loving each other through it, is a radical act. Love is a radical act. To every speaker who gave us their stage and every attendee who gave us their Saturday: the most valuable thing you can give is your time. You gave it. Thank you.

Third, the room. Melissa opened with MelissAI, her AI coach, and Finance to Funded. Fireside chats with Angela Yee and Sean Williams of Detroit vs. Everybody. Cristina Byrd in the founder spotlight. Our co-founder and CEO Johnnie Turnage moderated the founder panel with Shalanda Armstrong of 100KM Ventures, Jacob Allen, and Dr. Darrell Marshall of Total Analysis: trust before business, what capital wants to see now, knowing your numbers, vetting investors. CPG. Sales. A Pop-Up Pitch drawn from the room.

Rooms get people to do things they never would have done if they had not come into the room. This one was powerful, in the opportunity it put in front of Detroit's founders and in the ripple it set off: the introductions, the follow-ups, the first checks. Thank you, @newmajorityventure. Detroit will carry it forward.
