POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last week, Docubox was at DFM, reflecting on an important question for African documentary: how do we ensure stories reach audiences, inspire change and sustain impact beyond the screen?

We were proud to support Impact Day alongside Documentary Africa @officialdoca , Climate Storytelling Lab @climatestorylabafrica @climatestorylabza , Sunshine Cinema @sunshinecinema , and other industry partners. The day explored impact producing, audience engagement, strategic partnerships and the resources needed to drive meaningful change.

Through film case studies, an Impact Hackathon and conversations on impact financing, participants explored practical approaches to building impactful campaigns and sustaining the work of impact producers.

The Get Reel case study highlighted the programme’s journey from story development and filmmaking to impact campaigning, audience engagement and distribution. Supporting filmmakers to tell stories around SRHRJ, Get Reel created pathways for these films to reach communities, schools, conferences, cinemas and wider audiences. Project lead Makandi @cindymbae , Khalid @the_khalid_the_shamis from RCLA who was the mentor & grantee filmmakers Mumo @mumoliku and Saitabao @kaiyare shared their experiences with the programme.

Our Executive Director, Susan Mbogo ,@mbogosue ,also joined the panel “Who Is Fighting Our Corner? Film Advocacy and Lobbying on the African Continent,” discussing policy influence, industry advocacy and the future of African film.

We were honoured to present a $5,000 documentary cash award(Docubox award)to Where Do I Belong? by Snoopy Ibrahim, @brahimsnoopy , co-director of Khartoum.

We left DFM with fresh perspectives, new connections and a renewed commitment to supporting African documentary and the impact of its stories.

Thank you to our partners, filmmakers, panellists and everyone who made the week meaningful.

“Love your people when the world doesn’t, especially when the world doesn’t.”
The story is about exile and forced displacement experienced by people who have endured it for decades. Burials in Exile is my debut short film produced by @brahimsnoopy and directed by me. The film is rooted in my personal experience of forced displacement and explores what it means to live in exile while carrying home memory and belonging with you. I’m deeply grateful for the journey of making this film, for every conversation, every long day, every challenge, and every person who trusted us along the way. A special thanks to my protagonist Dr. Khidir Elkhawad for allowing us to document his journey and for trusting us with parts of his story. It was a privilege to witness and share it.
A special thanks to @docubox_eadff and @thewhyfoundation for believing in the story and supporting us in bringing it to life. This film is more than a film to me. It reminds us that even in exile, even in uncertainty, we keep finding ways to care for one another, remember where we come from, and carry our people with us.

Did you do something exciting these days?
Last Thursday, I was at the opening evening of the @afrikafilmfestivalkoeln
It was a fantastic evening, full of discoveries, meeting new cool people and fascinating stories from across the African Continent. When the GOAT @onita_boone_official sang, I was like “How can a singing voice be so powerful that I feel like I need to cry?”
The festival brings together a wealth of feature films and short films from Africa and offers a wonderful opportunity to discover new perspectives through cinema.
The @afrikafilmfestivalkoeln runs until September 27th in several cinemas in Cologne.
Did you miss it this year? Come next time, Cologne is worth a visit ❤️
