It took a village. Three women built one. 🩷 In 2020 I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer before I’d had the chance to become a mom. Treatment meant IVF, one embryo, and the news I’d need a surrogate — at a cost of $150,000, with none of the financial support oncology patients deserve. So two other survivors, Victoria Raphael and Ann Palmer, and I googled how to start a nonprofit, filled the chip dip at our own fundraisers, and bootstrapped A Chance For Life from nothing. My son, Chance, arrived in December 2023 — months after we awarded our first grant. This summer, our first grant recipients, Rusty and Christina, welcomed their daughter Stella after a two-year wait for the right surrogate. Every dollar donated helped make that happen. We were three women who turned pain into purpose. And we won’t rest until every woman gets her Chance. Six years ago today, on September 15 2020, I walked into a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with Stage Two Breast Cancer. My care team and I decided that was the day I would be declared cancer free, as all of the cancer was removed from my breast and lymph nodes. My chemotherapy, radiation, and adjuvant treatment that followed was an insurance policy to grab any little cells that slipped through the cracks. So I celebrate 9/15 each year and today I am SIX YEARS CANCER FREE🙏🏻🩷 The following pages are excerpts from the prologue of my book “Joy Mining” (working title). The book opens as I am walking into surgery. To celebrate this milestone, I’ve launched my Substack “The Art Of Joy Mining”. This year, we had the joy of honoring Juneteenth at @malaikacollective Made Here Block Party alongside the @meatpackingny! Thank you for having us. 🌀 The Memory Wall served as a living repository of truths, stories, and insights we wanted to remember. Across a series of reflection prompts, we invited our community to pause, reflect, and contribute to a collective experience. ✨ Our guiding question was: What deserves to be preserved for another generation? Y’all did not disappoint.👏🏾 You shared beautiful reflections on family, freedom, joy, resilience, love, and the lessons you hope will outlive you. Reading your words throughout the day was a reminder that our individual stories become something powerful when they’re held together. At Alchemy Society, we’re constantly exploring the tension between inheritance and living legacy: what we inherit, what we carry forward, and what we choose to rewrite. Being able to bring that work to a broader community through Made Here was incredibly special. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth, shared a piece of themselves, and reminded us we are not alone. Thank you for trusting us with your stories. Women’s sparring last weekend was lit, ladies. Big thanks to @recoverienyc for coming through with compression boots, @superareshop for the gear that we used to raise money for @bootsonground_nyc in the BX, and our amazing photographer, Irie from @brakethrough_media .
