Birthday blues.

This isn’t really a happy birthday for me this year. It’s a day filled with so many emotions. Sadness, gratitude, confusion, love… all of it at once.

I look at this picture and all I can think is, this little girl is spending her first birthday without her mom.

Birthdays are supposed to feel exciting, but this one just feels bittersweet. I’m grateful to see another year of life, while deeply missing the woman who gave me mine.

Bittersweet is really the only word I have for today.

To our babygirl, Beth Ann Brandyburg -

For the past 32 years, we watched you care for others. You worked as a caretaker for families, cared for people in hospice, and made sure people felt safe, loved, and never alone.

These last three months, the roles changed. We became your caretakers, and it was one of the greatest honors of our lives.

You were a mother to so many of my friends, always giving people your last even when you didn’t have much yourself. Growing up, we never understood why you showed so much grace to people we didn’t think deserved it.

Now we do.

That was simply who you were. You loved deeply, forgave freely, and always made room for people.

For as long as we can remember, people called us “Beth and the girls.” It was always you and your girls, and it always will be.

We’ll miss your love, your heart, your presence, and that damn good cooking.

You spent your life caring for everyone else. We just wish we had more time to care for you.
