To Infinity and Beyond Highlights ✨

In June, over 120 children and adults took to the Great Hall stage and showcased their talents across a variety of dance styles. From ballet, pointe, modern, jazz, tap, commercial, and musical theatre, the shows were a joyful celebration of all things dance and Disney, and everyone truly shone on stage.

We can’t wait to get back into the Studio in September with a very exciting year ahead!

Last year we were lucky enough to be involved in a project that would change the way local history is taught and understood.

We were invited to partner with @sheptonmallettc @historicengland and an absolutely incredible team of local researchers from Shepton Mallet History Society and beyond. Make the Sunshine was asked to be the community arm of this amazing project.

With amazing artists @tamsin_fessey @janebarry9224 @adventuresindance @lucyhobmandance and Angela and David we created a progamme of workshops, performances & education packs bringing to life the stories of three extraordinary women.

Women from Shepton Mallet like Louie Hatfield, a suffragette who fearlessly fought for change; Jean Garraway, an arts and crafts pioneer; and Dr Annie Hyatt, one of the UK’s first female doctors in the UK.

This wasn’t just about discovering history. It was about putting these women back where they belong:

Into classrooms.
Into conversations.
Into the curriculum.

Through workshops, theatre sessions and educational resources we shared these stories with hundreds of young people across St Aldhelm’s Church School, St Paul’s Junior School, Bowlish Infant School, Croscombe Primary School, @mendipschool and Stoke St Michael Primary School exploring these women’s lives and achievements, learning that history isn’t just something that happened somewhere else — it happened right here in Shepton Mallet.

Today that impact feels bigger than ever. To see Annie Hyatt and Louie Hatfield being celebrated nationally through Ancestry’s project in London and Annie’s story shared by her ancestor Selina Vickers on the banks of the Thames, is quite incredible. It’s amazing to think that the absolutely amazing work created by pupils from local schools has helped play a part changing the way we talk about women in history - a reminder of why this work really matters.

What started with a group of passionate researchers digging through archives and tracking down family connections has grown into something much bigger. They have brought these stories into consciousness. These women are no longer hidden figures. They have a place in local hearts and minds and a place in the history books.

We call it a rehearsal, but really it’s just a moment to make sure that the ceremony feels right.

A moment to realise what it’s all about, but making it fun and heartfelt along the way.

And just in case it’s not clear: Remember to walk slow, slower, slower than you think you’re walking!

This is one of my favourite times and especially with this family who were so open to ideas and made it a collaborative effort.

What a year it’s been for RE:ACT Performing & Production Arts! ⭐️

Before we dive head-first into pantomime season, we’ve taken a moment to reflect on everything our students, team and families have achieved together over the last educational year - and it’s pretty incredible.

Not everyone can get a front row seat… but they sure wish they could with our talented students! ⭐ Our lovely @rubycorlettx singing ‘There Are Worse Things I Could Do’ from our recent production of Grease proves just how stunning she is. A stellar actress and vocalist, humble, kind, and an absolute joy to work with - we’re certain Ruby will grace many stages in the future! 🎭 Ruby is just one of the many fantastic students we are proud to have as part of our company. Catch Ruby as one of our brilliant Roxie’s in Chicago this September - it’s going to be unmissable! 💃🕺
